Astros Vs. Red Sox

Sale struck out five and allowed just two earned runs, but the Red Sox wound up losing 7-2. Boston needs to come out guns blazing in Game 2.

Josh Reddick hit a solo homer leading off the ninth, and Yuli Gurriel curled a three-run shot into the front row beyond the Pesky Pole to clinch it. Ryan Brasier retired Yuli Gurriel with tying run on base to end a scoreless seventh, and Rick Porcello struck out two in a flawless eighth. But after a Steve Pearce single to open the fifth and a three-pitch strikeout of Brock Holt for the first out, Verlander's command deserted him. The lefty lasted only four innings, gave up two runs on one hit, walked four men and struck out five. As Price left the field, the crowd rose to applaud the pitcher they booed off the mound in Game 2 of the Division Series, and he tapped the brim of his cap.

Tonight's pitching matchup will feature Gerrit Cole taking on David Price.

All four of those runs he allowed came with two outs. If the Sox elect to go Sale for games 4 and 7, that leaves trying to find a start for games 3, 5, and 6. To lead off the frame, Bregman had been drilled on his padded left elbow by a 99.9-mph fastball in a 1-and-2 count, the second of three Astros who were hit by pitches in the series opener between baseball's two best teams.

Cora has expressed confidence in Price, a Cy Young Award victor who is 0-9 in 10 career postseason starts, and the 108-win Red Sox will need him to be better than Sale was in the opener. Whenever starters needed to be picked up, they picked us up and vice versa.

And the Red Sox bullpen, long considered the weakest segment of the Boston roster, had to cover the 13 outs that Price left behind, an effort that was aided by the insurance runs the Red Sox scored in the seventh and eighth against the Astros' previously untouchable bullpen (albeit the lesser portion of it).

The 28-year-old outfielder stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. In the American League however, both the Red Sox and the Astros are great.

"We've got to get them off the plate", Cora said.

"I gotta do what I gotta do for my players", he said.

Cora continued the argument and was ejected; he handed over his lineup card to bench coach Ron Roenicke and headed down the tunnel.

"From what I know it's nothing serious, but obviously whenever you have to go to the hospital you have to be quote-unquote anxious", manager Alex Cora said. "But once that happens, then you've got to reset and not relinquish the lead". We're not gonna hang our heads in the locker room.

For starters, the Astros had to lose a postseason game for the first time this fall, and lose a game at Fenway Park for just the fourth time in 11 games dating to the start of 2017.

Boston responded in the bottom of the third, loading the bases with one out.

Price, 16-7 in this year's regular season, has two post-season wins in relief in his career.

There had been no announcement about when Sale would pitch next, but if the Sox wanted to keep him on regular rest, he won't be ready to start again until a potential Game 6 back at Fenway Park on Saturday.
