Brett Kavanaugh: FBI contacts second woman

President Donald Trump has given the FBI one week to conduct an investigation of the allegations that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted a woman in 1980s.

10 to approve Mr Kavanaugh's nomination to the US Supreme Court but the full Senate vote will be delayed while the FBI investigate allegations of sexual assault against him. Senators Jeff Flake of Arizona, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of ME forced the hands of Republican leaders in seeking the delay, because Kavanaugh must have the support of at least two of them to win confirmation in a chamber Republicans govern, 51-49.

Independent journalist Marcy Wheeler argued that the primary reason the White House is working to "carefully control" the scope of the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe is because "Kavanaugh lied so much on Thursday that if Federal Bureau of Investigation pursues obvious leads, [Kavanaugh] will get referred for lying his ass off". Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, said they wouldn't vote in favor of the judge's confirmation without one.

Members of the Senate questioned Kavanaugh about his drinking habits and sexual experience. The man said he and another friend went to beat Judge Kavanaugh up - then said he recognized him recently when television showed Judge Kavanaugh after he was nominated to the high court.

"While I've already announced my opposition to Kavanaugh because he has sided with corporations over workers and Wall Street over consumers, I strongly support a thorough investigation by the FBI".

Following Ford's testimony, Kavanaugh vigorously denied the allegations before the committee and accused Democrats of launching a last-minute attempt to derail his nomination.

"The White House is not getting involved in the FBI investigation in that way", Conway added. Specifically, the original report was that no interviews were to be take from the third accuser, Julie Swetnick, who alleges that Kavanaugh was part of a gang rape ring in high school.

White it remains unclear who else the FBI may engage during the investigation, at least two potentially key witnesses have said they intend to cooperate. The judge sailed through confirmation hearings earlier this month before facing a barrage of allegations, none which have yet been corroborated by evidence or witnesses.

Leland Keyser, a friend of Christine Blasey Ford since high school, has issued a second letter confirming that she does not know Brett Kavanaugh and that she can not corroborate the claims that Ford has made against the Supreme Court nominee.

Last week, Patrick J. Smyth, who attended Georgetown Prep high school with Kavanaugh, told the judiciary committee that he had no knowledge of the gathering or of any improper conduct by Kavanaugh.

Amid reports of the White House tightening the reins on the investigation, Trump said: 'The FBI I believe is doing a really great job. When and if we do, we will promptly disclose to them all information and witnesses in our possession. "It is illegal to obstruct Committee investigations", Grassley said in the letter.

"I think we're all pretty confident, given that we've been through this process a number of times, but we would assess that at that point, " Sanders said.

An FBI spokeswoman did not immediately respond to questions about the investigation, including how many agents would be assigned and whether it could be completed in a week.
