First lady's plane makes emergency landing in Washington

Melania Trump will make an appearance in Philadelphia on Wednesday.

Reports from inside the plane say Secret Service officers hopped up from their seats and rushed toward the front of the plane.

CNN and other United States networks said that reporters aboard the plane noticed smoke in the cabin and were told to hold wet towels over their faces if it got worse.

"Like it or not, she is the first lady and this is the White House", Stephanie Grisham, Trump's communications director, told CNN in a statement.

One of the journalist's on the plane said an aide to the First Lady came into their compartment to inform them that there was a "mechanical problem".

Her flight is returning to Andrews Air Force Base shortly after taking off.

The mechanical issue caused a strong smell of smoke.

Other details about the incident were not provided.

Mrs Trump had been scheduled to visit a Philadelphia hospital and meet families of children affected by exposure to opioids while in the womb. "It is good to be with all of you". ABC News' Tom Llamas asked her. "We're having a few issues up here".

She also advised her husband about people who she thinks he can trust.

"It's harder to govern", the first lady said of untrustworthy people.
