Friday's Mega Millions jackpot soars to $1 billion

From July 27 through October 16, Mega Millions sales in North Carolina raised an estimated $10.6 million for education, the lottery site said.

About 280 million tickets sold in Friday's drawing, none matching the winning mix of 7, 15, 23, 53, 65 and 70 to claim an estimated prize of $US1 billion ($1.4 billion).

The victor might opt for the cash prize of more than $270 million, from which the federal government will take 25% right away, and more later.

That's right. Mega Millions "entered historic territory" Saturday after officials confirmed there were no winners for Friday's drawing.

The numbers have been drawn for Saturday's estimated $470 million Powerball jackpot.

But if you are itching to play, you could win even more on Tuesday.

The jackpots for both Mega Millions and Powerball have both risen.

A sign in the window of a liquor store shows the Powerball lottery jackpot at $700 million in Washington, on January 7, 2016.

The Mega Millions jackpot has been growing since July, when a group of 11 California office workers won $543 million. The last time anyone won the Powerball was on August 11th in NY for $245 million.

Tickets are $2 at any place that sells N.C. lottery tickets.

It costs $2 to play the game, but the odds of winning the jackpot aren't good.

In Florida and Tennessee, two people won $2 million, while seven others took home $1 million in seven other states including Indiana.
