Indonesia says survivors unlikely from Lion Air plane crash

Indonesia says survivors unlikely from Lion Air plane crash

On tarpaulins at Jakarta's port, officers laid out items retrieved from the sea ranging from oxygen bottles to personal belongings such as wallets, a mobile phone, cash and backpacks.

"Indeed there were reports about a technical problem, and the technical problem has been resolved in accordance with the procedures released by the plane manufacturer", he said.

Indonesia's poor aviation safety record, though, has other experts believing that factors such as human error or poor oversight are more likely to be behind Monday's tragedy.

Delhi based Indian pilot Bhavye Suneja, was the captain of Indonesian carrier Lion Air's Boeing 737 Max + that has crashed into the sea today taking down 189 people on board.

Sirait said there was no plan to ground the rest of its Boeing 737 Max 8 fleet.

Boeing said it is "deeply saddened" by the crash and was prepared to provide technical assistance to Indonesia's probe.

Boeing reportedly suspended release of the 737 MAX just days out from its first commercial delivery past year due to an engine issue, according to airline safety and product review site airlineratings.com.

"It has been confirmed that it has crashed", Basarnas spokesman Yusuf Latif said by text message, when asked about the fate of the Lion Air plane.

"We don't dare to say what the facts are, or are not, yet", he said.

The search for the black box is crucial to answering why a brand new plane flying on a clear day could suffer such an ill fate.

They gathered at crisis centers set up by the authorities at airports, hoping desperately for a miracle.

A search and rescue agency official says he's not expecting any survivors from the Lion Air plane that crashed into seas off Jakarta with 189 people aboard.

The bans directly affected few flights, but Europeans were discouraged from flying on Indonesian airlines while visiting the country, where planes are the only practical way to hop among tourist-destination islands including Bali, Java and Sumatra.

Bambang Suryo, operational director of the search and rescue agency, said divers, sonar vessels and an underwater drone were searching the site.

The request was approved, but communications from the plane went silent before it fell into the sea minutes later.

"You could feel the explosion from the shockwave in the water", said Gauk, who goes by only one name, telling the pair's story from the beach in Karawang regency.

Lion Air is one of Indonesia's youngest and biggest airlines, flying to dozens of domestic and worldwide destinations.

Debris thought to be from the plane, including aircraft seats, was found near an offshore refining facility in the Java Sea, an official of state energy firm Pertamina said.

Data sent from the plane showed erratic speed, altitude and direction in the minutes after takeoff. "But the most important is the blackbox".

He said it is hard to pin a specific accident on the safety culture, but that global regulators will be closely watching the investigation into Flight 610, which will look for clues from the plane's flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder.

The weather at the time of the crash was clear, Tjahjono said.

Flight JT 610 was headed for the western city of Pangkal Pinang on Monday when it came down. Weather conditions were normal but the aircraft had experienced a technical issue on its previous flight.

Under global rules, the US National Transportation Safety Board will automatically assist with the inquiry, backed up by technical advisers from Boeing and US-French engine maker CFM worldwide, co-owned by General Electric and Safran.

Lion Air said in a statement that the pilot and co-pilot had had more than 11,000 flight hours between them.

The 737 Max series are the fastest-selling planes in Boeing's history and there are four models - the Max 7, Max 8, Max 9 and Max 10.

In 2015, a turboprop operated by Indonesia's Trigana Air crashed in Papua province, killing all 54 people on board. Investigators blamed a rudder control system that had malfunctioned almost two dozen times in the previous year, combined with the pilots' response.

Traffic on the world's airlines - measured in the number of miles or kilometres flown by passengers - jumped 8.1 per cent a year ago, the fastest rate of growth since 2005, according to the International Air Transport Association, a trade group for the industry.
