Kavanaugh's nomination sealed after crucial senator reveals her vote

The American Bar Association is rethinking its conclusion that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is "well qualified", according to news site Axios.

Lisa Murkowski explained her decision Friday to oppose the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Under rules approved past year, 50 votes are needed for a majority in the procedural vote, which will be followed by a debate on the nomination before a final, definitive confirmation vote.

Flake forced Republicans to launch the additional investigation last week after a tense negotiation with Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats.

No Republicans have said they will vote against Kavanaugh, although four have not committed to supporting him.

Moments after Collins completed her remarks, Sen. Republican Sen. Susan Collins of ME, who voted to advance Kavanaugh, said she will announce her decision on confirmation later Friday.

Collins said the FBI investigation appeared to be thorough. Similarly, Flake suggested he would vote "yes" for Kavanaugh "unless something big changes".

Ms Murkowski won her seat as a write-in candidate after having lost the Republican primary in 2010 and has been a reliably centrist vote ever since. "I think any fair-minded person who read the report would reach the same conclusion". Kavanaugh's partisan comments were not the result of an unscripted outburst.

A Republican Senator, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, voted against the motion to invoke cloture, while one Democratic Senator, Joe Manchin of West Virginia, voted for, the two cross-votes canceling each other.

"Any human being who has been falsely accused of a range of things including gang rape has a right to be upset, has a right to be angry, and that's what we saw last week", said White House spokesperson Kerri Kupec during an interview with Morning Edition. Also voting to move the nomination forward was Democratic Sen. Heitkamp is one of the most vulnerable Democrats on the ballot in November and has seen her poll numbers slip in recent weeks.

Kavanaugh's confirmation is not yet a done deal.

On Thursday, actresses Amy Schumer and Emily Ratajkowski among the protesters detained in anti-Kavanaugh demonstrations.

The opinion column went live shortly before The Wall Street Journal published an op-ed written by Kavanaugh, in which he described his testimony as "forceful and passionate" and affirmed his commitment to "keep an open mind in every case".

Coons said undecided senators ought to "weigh very carefully" the temperament Kavanaugh displayed during last week's hearing.

The math is breaking in Kavanaugh's favor as the climax drew near for a spellbinding, election-season fight that's been fought against the backdrop of the #MeToo movement and stalwart conservative support for President Donald Trump.

The Kavanaugh fight has riveted Americans just weeks before November 6 elections in which Democrats are trying to take control of Congress from the Republicans.

The vote - 51-49 in favour - was a test of support for the nominee who has faced sexual assault allegations from several women. After earlier calling Ford's claim 'very credible, ' the president mocked her testimony at a rally Tuesday in Southaven, Mississippi.

The FBI report was not released to the public. If so, that could be enough for a Trump victory.

"He will be an illegitimate justice, and his confirmation will mark a point of no return for the Supreme Court's reputation as the one, apolitical branch of government", Fallon said. Republican leaders sounded unmoved.

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said the Federal Bureau of Investigation was unable to locate "any third parties who could attest to any of these allegations - no backup from any witnesses, including those specifically named as eyewitnesses by the people who brought the allegations in the first place".
