Liberal Hollywood celebrities feel blue, see red after Kavanaugh confirmation

"A white woman Senator is talking about presumption of innocence that is never offered to Black men in America".

Brett Kavanaugh was sworn in as US Supreme Court justice on Saturday, the court said, after a deeply divided US Senate confirmed him to the court and Republicans dismissed accusations of sexual misconduct against the conservative judge.

Kavanaugh's confirmation felt almost inevitable by Friday afternoon, when two previously undecided senators, Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., announced they would support him.

"In front of the MS audience, Trump had mimicked Ford's testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, including the moment where she explained that there were certain details of the alleged sexual assault she couldn't remember".

"It's energized our base going into the election in a way we had not been able to figure out how to do prior to this", McConnell said. "I'm proud of my colleagues".

The Democratic Party comes out of this confirmation battle as a loser as well. "I think the people from Alaska will never forgive her for what she did". "That's about to change". He is the second Supreme Court justice appointed under Trump. Kavanaugh has denied all the accusations.

The vote comes after weeks of unrest around the country after Kavanaugh was accused of sexual misconduct by Palo Alto University professor Dr. Christine Blasey Ford.

The Supreme Court says he will be sworn in later Saturday. A total of 164 people were arrested in the protests, US Capitol Police said.

Manchin was the only Democrat to vote for Kavanaugh's confirmation.

There are no blockbusters among the 38 cases already on the docket for the current Supreme Court term, which began on Monday, but justices often add disputes on controversial issues as they are appealed from lower courts.

The Democrats however are still tipped to win back a majority in the House.

One of the most poignant - and probably the most prescient sentence - from Christine Blasey Ford's testimony was this one: "I was calculating daily the risk benefit for me of coming forward, and wondering whether I would just be jumping in front of a train that was headed to where it was headed anyway and that I would just be personally annihilated".

Kavanaugh's confirmation leaves the Senate traumatized with Republicans and Democrats as estranged as at any time in recent memory, reflecting the cavernous divides in the country itself during a presidency that has ignited rare political passions.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY called the fight "a sorry epilogue to the brazen theft of Justice Scalia's seat".

Asked whether Palin might mount a credible GOP primary challenge, Trump said, "I don't know anything about that".

Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation to the Supreme Court is all but certain.

"I would say if we're talking about the Supreme Court and Judge Kavanaugh, I think he's highly qualified for the Supreme Court", Mrs. Trump said while speaking to reporters in Egypt during a solo global trip to Africa.

On Friday, in the moment that made clear Kavanaugh would prevail, Collins delivered a speech saying that Ford's Judiciary Committee telling of the alleged 1982 assault was "sincere, painful and compelling".

"A pox on both houses for the way this was conducted", Ohio Governor John Kasich, a moderate Republican, told CNN's "State of the Union". "It will be the story of an avalanche of women who spoke truths and seized our power".

"When I hear that, it causes me huge pain because I have met with so many survivors of sexual attacks, including close friends".

McConnell had blocked a vote on Democratic President Barack Obama's choice of Merrick Garland to the high court in 2016, citing tradition of not filling vacancies in a presidential election year.

Democrats have always faced a hard Senate map - six of the competitive seats that they hold are in states Trump won, and five of those states he carried by at least 19 points - but their path now is more treacherous.

One of them was Sen.

"I do not believe that these charges can fairly prevent Judge Kavanaugh from serving on the court", Collins said.

But her "no" vote will be balanced by a "yes" from the only Democrat set to back the nomination.
