Melania meets Ghana's first lady over tea during solo Africa trip

US First Lady Melania Trump visited a hospital in Ghana's capital, Accra, at the start of her solo trip that will see her visit four African countries.

"She had always envisioned that Africa would be her first solo worldwide trip", her communications director, Stephanie Grisham said.

With a wave and a smile, First Lady Melania Trump arrived in Ghana Tuesday.

The American First Lady's tour would take her Malawi, Kenya and Egypt.

Mrs Trump also donated hampers and gifts to mothers and children at the Child Welfare Clinic of the Hospital.

She'll be visiting Ghana's neonatal intensive care unit, and then meet President Nana Akufo-Addo later in the day.

As she greets dignitaries in the four countries, Melania Trump is expected to engage in the kind of "soft diplomacy" expected of first ladies.

Trump will focus on maternal and newborn care in hospitals and education for children, the first lady's office said in a statement.

She was met by her Ghanaian counterpart Rebecca Akufo-Addo and a group of local schoolchildren in yellow and brown uniforms waving the United States stars and stripes and the Ghanaian flag. The two first met last week in NY at a reception on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, where Mrs. Trump spoke about her upcoming trip.

Trump had tea with Akufo-Addo behind closed doors at Jubilee Palace, reported CNN.

President Trump has been quoted as saying immigrants from Africa came from "sh**hole countries".

The first lady's visit to Africa could be made hard because of the past actions and words of her husband. FLOTUS offered a Chippendale tray etched with an image of the White House, and her host, in turn, offered a kente cloth, a Ghanian fabric with multicolored stripes. Her campaign, called "Be Best", focuses on issues including social media use and opioid abuse.

Meservey told VOA, "I think the U.S. -Africa relationship is much bigger than the president's comments".
