Israeli warplanes carried out about 20 airstrikes across the Gaza Strip on predawn Wednesday, injuring dozens of Palestinians.

Health ministry officials in Gaza said three people were wounded in an Israeli air strike against an armed training camp in Rafah, in the south of the coastal strip.

"We will defend Israeli civilians", it added. The other came down in the sea off Tel Aviv, 70 kilometres from Gaza, the army said.

Lieberman has opposed indirect truce talks between Hamas and Israel that were prompted by the August escalation, which could have led to an easing of Gaza's blockade in exchange for assurances from Hamas about preventing attacks, but have since been stalled. - The border protests since March 30 have been labelled the "Great March of Return" because they call for Palestinian refugees to return to their former homes inside what is now Israel.

Israel and Hamas have fought three wars over the past decade and fighting has flared up on several occasions recently, though neither side appears to be interested in another full-blown war.

Nickolay Mladenov, the United Nations special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, called the developments "a unsafe escalation". Beersheva is Israel's fourth largest city.

On Wednesday morning the Code Red alarm sounded again in the region close to the northern Gaza border.

Keren Kayemet L'Israel - the Jewish National Fund (KKL-JNF) also said attacks from arson balloons and kites from Gaza since April have destroyed more than half of the forested areas surrounding the border with Gaza.

Hamas clearly misinterpreted Israel's willingness to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza and apparently thought it was the beginning of Israel's capitulation.

The protesters have been demanding an end to Israel's blockade and the right of return to land now inside Israel, from which their families were expelled or fled during the 1948 war that accompanied its creation.

Earlier, Conricus told CBN News that Hamas is trying to involve the worldwide community by getting Israel to kill Palestinians.

"The correct response is that a terrorist who enters Israel from Gaza can not return alive".

In retaliation Israel struck 20 targets in Gaza, killing one Palestinian, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
