Saudi Arabia vows retaliation against U.S. sanction 'threats' following Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance

But the oil-rich kingdom has found itself threatened with "severe punishment" by U.S. President Donald Trump over the disappearance this month of Jamal Khashoggi, a journalist critical of Saudi authorities. Khashoggi was a former Saudi government advisor who reportedly went into a self-imposed exile in the United States in 2017 to avoid a possible arrest.

The statements from Europe follow warnings from US President Donald Trump, who said the alleged crime had "something really bad and disgusting" about it. Last week, Saudi Arabia allowed Turkey to search its consulate in Istanbul.

Turkish authorities have said he was killed there, a claim that Saudi Arabia has vehemently denied.

According to his fiancee, Khashoggi entered the Saudi consulate in the Turkish city of Istanbul and never came out. American lawmakers have threated sanctions against the Saudis, and Germany, France and Britain jointly called today for a "credible investigation" into Mr Khashoggi's disappearance.

While expressing support for joint Saudi-Turkish efforts to look into his disappearance, they said the Saudi government must provide "a complete and detailed response", indicating that such a message had been conveyed "directly" to Riyadh.

Investment in sport has proved a viable option for those two oil-rich gulf states looking to project soft power and improve the global prestige of their nations overseas and, it's claimed, Saudi Arabia are set to look to do the same.

On Sunday, the Saudi stock market dropped as much as 7% following President Trump's threats of "severe punishment", indicating that investors are spooked.

In an interview scheduled to air today, Mr Trump told CBS' 60 Minutes that Saudi Arabia would face strong consequences if involved in Mr Khashoggi's disappearance.

Media companies and some technology executives have pulled out of a major Saudi investment conference dubbed "Davos in the Desert", scheduled for next week in Riyadh, because of growing outrage over the disappearance.

"We were going to browse appliances for our new home and meet with our friends and family members over dinner", she wrote.

Earlier on Sunday, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Abdul Latif bin Rashid Al Zayani denounced the media campaign against Saudi Arabia and pointed out that some media outlets "violated principles of the code of ethics in the media".

Cengiz, a doctoral student at a university in Istanbul, wrote: "If the allegations are true, and Jamal has been murdered by the errand boys of Mohammed bin Salman, he is already a martyr".

Turkish officials suspect the Washington Post columnist had been killed and dismembered inside the building.
