SC shooting: 7 officers shot, one fatally

Authorities identified 74-year-old Frederick Hopkins, a disbarred lawyer, as the suspect in a Wednesday shooting in Florence, South Carolina, that killed one police officer and injured six more.

The sheriff in charge of the investigation into a shooting that killed one police officer and wounded six others in SC says his deputies haven't finished processing the massive crime scene in an upscale neighborhood.

The Florence police officer who died has been named as 52-year-old Terrence Carraway, who was recently honoured for 30 years of police service.

The condition of the other six is not yet known, although there are fears some may have been seriously wounded.

Lott says a suspect is in custody but investigators aren't to the point where they are ready to file charges. "Pray for the bravest police officer I know". He then kept shooting as additional officers responded.

Lott said a special Federal Bureau of Investigation team that investigated the fatal shootings of five police officers in Dallas in 2016 and deaths of 59 people and wounding of hundreds more in Las Vegas previous year is helping collect evidence from the crime scene at an upscale Florence subdivision.

South Carolina Governor, Henry McMaster, solicited prayers for those officers who remain injured in hospital - their condition is now unknown.

Heidler, who was on scene at the time, estimated that about a half-hour passed between when the officers were shot and when they were finally recovered with an armored vehicle.

Carraway had started a mentoring program for disadvantaged youths called Camp FEVER, said Heidler, the police chief.

Florence County Sheriff's Office Deputy Chief Glenn Kirby said Hopkins had the upper hand in the shootout: "The way this suspect was positioned, his view of fire was several hundred yards".

Hopkins is listed as one of the owners of the house where the shooting occurred, online property records show.

Hopkins was charged in 2014 with disorderly conduct, court records show. At 6 p.m., about two hours after the incident began, the suspect surrendered to deputies after talking to a negotiator. Seth was struck in the shooting, he said.

Records and social media posts unearthed Thursday showed that Frederick Hopkins became serious about amateur target-shooting around the time he lost his law license in the 1980s for mishandling money.

Mourners held a candlelight vigil Thursday night for Carraway inside a Florence church.

All the children are now safe, police said.

Authorities said the shootings happened in Vintage Place, an upscale neighbourhood in the western part of the city. Florence Police Sergeant Terrence Carraway heard the calls on his radio that several deputies were down and rushed to the scene to help.

President Donald Trump reacted to the tragedy on Twitter.

Florence, a city of 37,000 in South Carolina's northeastern corner, sits at the convergence of Interstates 95 and 20 northwest of the state's well-known "Grand Strand" of beaches.

"This is simply devastating news from Florence", said Gov. Henry McMaster, who also ordered flags around the state to half-staff.
