The Sunday Edition: President Donald Trump Tweetstorm

It was the latter - who hailed from OH - that trump praised as "incredible", though the distinction was somewhat unclear from teh way Trump told the story. In fact, Trump was talking about Ulysses S. Grant, the heavy-drinking general who eventually led the Union to victory against the South.

Trump's praise of Lee came after he asked black voters to "honor" the GOP by voting for Republicans in November.

"An attached video clip lacked the full context for Trump's remark", NBC News' admission of guilt stated this afternoon.

So the media were positively salivating when Trump, holding a campaign rally in OH on Friday, began talking about Civil War generals. Grant, who went on to become the 18th president of the United States, was a native of OH and this marked Trump's attempt to make note of the great Ohioans who hail from the Buckeye State.

Trump called Robert E. Lee, the commander of the Confederate Army, a "great general" as he talked about his skill as a military tactician. As usual, dishonest reporting. Finally, Lincoln made Ulysses S. Grant his general - and the war started to turn around.

Other media outlets also criticized the president's speech based on the inaccurate reporting, The Daily Caller reported.

"Trump praises Robert E. Lee during OH rally", an article on Politico said.

However, the initial NBC error set up an entire news cycle of criticism of the president, painting him - once again - as a Confederate sympathizer and a racist.

"Lincoln had nearly developed a phobia because he was having a hard time with a true great fighter and a great general, Robert E. Lee", Trump said just moments later.

"An earlier tweet misidentified the general President Trump described as "incredible" at a rally in OH", they tweeted.

Trump's critique was most likely referring to an NBC News video post that left out his full remarks. But his focus was on the man who ultimately defeated Lee - General Grant.

"It also gave you a general who was incredible". But he made the statement in the context of talking about how hard it was for President Abraham Lincoln to defeat him. "You guys aren't winning.' And his name was Grant, General Grant", Trump explained.

"One day, it was looking really bad", Trump said later in his speech.

Trump claimed Lincoln feared Lee, saying that after an unnamed battle, "Abraham Lincoln came home, he said, 'I can't beat Robert E. Lee'".
