US Sec of State to meet N. Korea's Kim on Sunday

On U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's upcoming visit to Pyongyang, Park said the party hoped both sides "open their hearts" and talk candidly.

While Moon continues to talk with President Donald Trump, urging him to make peace with North Korea, North Korea plans to take a stronger stance in negotiations with the United States and suggested that Pyongyang will renounce denuclearization until the Korean War is formally brought to an end.

Pompeo will visit Pyongyang Sunday as the US pushes to dismantle the regime's nuclear weapons program and set up a second summit between President Donald Trump and Kim.

Pompeo's return to Pyongyang comes in line with his meeting with North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly last week.

Pompeo will be pushing for progress on achieving the goal of denuclearisation that Trump and Kim agreed to only in vague terms at their summit in Singapore.

North Korea, which has halted weapons tests and dismantled at least parts of a nuclear and rocket test sites, says it wants an easing of economic sanctions before it gives up its atomic weapons.

In a commentary, KCNA yesterday said declaring the war's end should have "been resolved half a century ago", and called it "the most basic and primary process for the establishment of new DPRK-US relations and peace" on the Korean peninsula "to which the US was also committed", referring to North Korea by its official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

On the agenda is likely the planning of a second summit between Kim and President Trump.

The trip would be Pompeo's fourth to North Korea and comes a month after Trump canceled a trip the top USA diplomat had planned for August.

"It shows forward progress and momentum that the secretary is making his fourth trip back in less than a year", a State Department spokeswoman said.

Choe is a veteran diplomat who was once involved in now-stalled multilateral talks on North Korea's denuclearization and represented her country in negotiations with the United States.

The North entered talks with the United States and South Korea earlier this year, saying it's willing to negotiate away its advancing nuclear arsenal.

On Saturday, Trump lavished praise on Kim - considered by human rights groups to be one of the world's most repressive leaders - and said they had fallen "in love" after an exchange of letters. But he added that much work remains to be done and that the sanctions against the DPRK will stay in place "until denuclearization occurs".

"There is nothing the USA could get from sanctions and it is no [one] other than them who will be put at disadvantage", the Rodong Sinmun, the official mouthpiece of the ruling Workers' Party, said in an editorial.
