California bar patron saves dozens of people during deadly shooting

The gunman was dead inside the bar, Ventura County Sheriff's Sergeant Eric Buschow said, but he did not say how he died.

Teylor Whittler told "Fox & Friends" she was at the country bar celebrating a friend's 21st birthday when the shooting occurred. "It's unfair, it's not right, and I'm just so sorry for the families who are hurt and who lost their lives".

"Within a split second, everybody yelled 'get down, ' " she said.

Some mistook the gunfire for firecrackers when he began shooting, the New York Times reported.

"They found 11 victims that had been killed", said Dean of the first response unit before detailing that the death of Helus brought the toll to 12, not including the gunman.

Only 10 days ago a gunman killed 11 worshipers at a synagogue in Pittsburgh.

"It was chaos, people jumping out of windows, hopping over gates and just trying to get out", he said.

An unknown number of people were wounded after the shooting at the bar, a popular venue with college students and local young adults for parties and dancing.

Colleagues of a policeman who died after being among the first to respond to a mass shooting at a packed California bar have hailed him as a "hero". "That's the stuff I'm truly going to miss", he said.

The 23-year-old was a recent graduate of California Lutheran University, and "heroically saved lives in the incident", according to the university's president, Chris Kimball.

"They found him", he told reporters.

It was the latest chapter in America's epidemic of gun violence. "I dropped to the floor", she said.

"Ron was a hardworking, dedicated sheriff's sergeant", Dean said, choking back tears.

Wearing a black jacket and sunglasses, the suspect shot a security guard and young female cashier before showering the Borderline bar in Thousand Oaks near Los Angeles with bullets. It was not clear whether he killed himself or was killed by officers, Dean said.

Hundreds of people were inside the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks when Long, armed with an uzi, unleashed a terrifying barrage of smoke bombs before opening fire and killing 12 people, leaving "blood everywhere". He was set to retire next year, CNN reported.

The shooter who opened fire inside a California country bar Wednesday night has been identified as 28-year-old U.S. Marine veteran Ian David Long by police.

"We can't confirm the shooter is in custody at this point", Ventura County Sheriff's Office Capt. Garo Kuredjian said at a news conference.

She said she was part of a group of line dancers that met at the bar for a college night every Wednesday.
