Day for May as she seeks backing for draft Brexit deal

The Cabinet meeting, scheduled for after Prime Minister's questions, will coincide with a gathering of ambassadors from the other 27 European Union member nations in Brussels, who will also discuss the draft deal.

On Wednesday afternoon, May will discuss the agreement with her Cabinet.

A string of diplomatic meetings are now being lined up to take place if Mrs May survives her Cabinet meeting at 2pm today. May's government may yet see more cabinet resignations this week.

"Recent interventions from government ministers have suggested that you and your government may seek to limit or constrain the process on the final vote, in an attempt to muzzle Parliament", the leaders said in the letter.

Earlier this month, Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said Brexit has "undermined" the landmark Good Friday Agreement, which in 1998 ended decades of violence in Northern Ireland.

The DUP has warned British Prime Minister Theresa May that the draft Brexit deal could lead to the break-up of the UK.

Among the biggest obstacles in reaching agreement has been the length of time over which the Irish backstop - to prevent the development of a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland - would apply.

After months of negotiations we finally have a Brexit breakthrough.

Pro-Brexit lawmakers in May's Conservative Party - including some members of the Cabinet - say the agreement will leave Britain tethered to the European Union after it departs and unable to forge an independent trade policy.

Analysts cautioned that May still had to win over many members of her party as well as the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party, which props up her minority government.

However, the backstop is set not to come with a fixed end date, as demanded by pro-Brexit MPs, but with a "review clause" for deciding when it can come to an end. The UK would also have to continue following numerous European Union rules in areas like the environment, employee protections and state aid.

She's survived the loss of some of key figures in her Cabinet - former Brexit Secretary David Davis and Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said "given the shambolic nature of the negotiations, this is unlikely to be a good deal for the country".

"We are clearly not out of the woods yet", the London-based Capital Economics research group said in a note to clients.

The UK government faced with a no deal would then need to make a statement to parliament at some point in January outlining what it intends to do, which would then be voted on in parliament.

Senior officials had discussed yesterday whether United Kingdom nationals should be treated as "third country" nationals as part of its no-deal planning, which would require travellers to buy a 60-euro (£52) permit to cross the channel.

The pound rose on the announcement late yesterday but fell back to $1.296 this morning as politicians reacted negatively to the deal.

Surrounded by over a dozen political reporters, they warned the proposal looked like it would breach their Brexit red lines and urged Cabinet ministers to rebel over it.

The whole process should end on March 29, 2019 when Britain will officially leave the European Union, as determined in a referendum held in 2016.

She added that "these are momentous days and the decisions being taken will have long-lasting ramifications" and pointedly stated that "every individual vote will count" in the Commons.

The European Commission announced on Tuesday that it will instead place the United Kingdom alongside the US, Australia and Brazil on the list of countries whose citizens do not need a visa.

A "meaningful vote" in this case means the prime minister has to abide by the results of the vote.

The DUP's Nigel Dodds said the party "couldn't possibly vote for" the deal. As many as nine ministers will go into that with misgivings.

"The main obstacle will be the United Kingdom parliament, where it remains highly uncertain whether May will garner enough support for this withdrawal agreement", she added. And Labour would push for a general election to give someone else the opportunity to negotiate a better deal.
