Facebook IDs, blocks dozens of flagged accounts before midterm elections

The company said the concern was that the accounts were linked in "coordinated inauthentic behavior" and was investigating them in greater detail.

Facebook took action after being tipped off Sunday evening by USA law enforcement officials, who said recently discovered online activity, 'may be linked to foreign entities, ' Facebook's head of cybersecurity policy, Nathaniel Gleicher, wrote.

Almost all of the blocked Facebook pages appeared to be written in French or Russian, although the Instagram accounts were mostly in English, the company said, noting that some of the Instagram accounts focused on celebrities and political debate.

The Instagram accounts were mostly in English, with some "focused on celebrities, others political debate".

At this early stage, Facebook says it doesn't know which foreign actors were attempting to spread mischief on its platform, or whether any of these accounts are linked to the Russia-based Internet Research Agency.

Facebook has disrupted a disinformation campaign targeting the U.S. midterm elections first detected by American law enforcement.

She said Russian "trolls", or provocateurs, were likely stoking sentiments on both ends of the USA political spectrum "but that the network we now have identified is targeting the far right of American political discourse".

Russian Federation is accused of propaganda campaign in favour of Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential vote.

On Monday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, in a joint statement with the Department of Homeland Security, Justice Department and Director of National Intelligence, said that the agencies had "no indication of compromise of our nation's election infrastructure that would prevent voting, change vote counts, or disrupt the ability to tally votes".

They were widely criticized following the 2016 presidential election for allowing themselves to be exploited by foreign influence campaigns.

Common Cause, the nonpartisan citizen's lobby, which was keeping a tally of disinformation on social media, said it was unable to tell immediately the genesis of the misleading Twitter posts.

Facebook's investigation said it had identified around 30 Facebook and 85 Instagram accounts linked to the suspect behavior.

The war room is part of stepped up security announced by Facebook, which will be adding some 20,000 employees.
