Homeless parents arrested over baby death

The baby's body is believed to have drifted in the water for two days before washing up at Surfers Paradise beach where she was found after midnight on Monday.

A passer-by found her body on Surfers Paradise Beach, lying in the sand at the edge of the water in the middle of the night.

The baby's father, aged in his late 40s, will face an extradition hearing in Queensland, brought by NSW Police, on Wednesday. He's expected to be charged by police upon his successful return to New South Wales.

"We still have two people in custody, a male and female", he said.

Detectives are investigating the death of a toddler whose body was discovered on a popular Gold Coast beach overnight, less than a kilometre from the schoolies celebrations hub.

According to The Courier-Mail, police are trying to ascertain whether the nine-moth-old was drowned by her homeless parents at the popular tourist spot or killed earlier at Tweed Heads.

A homeless woman, Kirsty Davis, may have been the last person to see the nine-month-baby alive.

"I called police to check the baby was not going to be released again with the family to sleep rough".

"I can only imagine what it was like, but full credit to them [first responders], they stood up and did their service. there was no chance of saving her [baby]".

Queensland police could not immediately confirm that the couple had a second child with them and the state's child safety authority has refused to comment, citing privacy reasons.

A family of four, including the baby, were tracked down on CCTV as they headed towards the harbour before heading back to Queensland without the youngster. "I am very proud of what they did", Detective Insp Hogan said.

Child safety advocate Hetty Johnston says taxpayers deserve answers, and there must be a public inquiry into how the baby was left in such a heart-breaking situation.

She is now under the care of Queensland mental health services.

LNP leader Deb Frecklington demanded to know "what the hell" Child Safety officers were doing. "And if they didn't know, then there's something seriously wrong there".

The child's cause of death remains unclear but it's understood she had no major visible injuries.
