Island company in Brexit criminal investigation

Island company in Brexit criminal investigation

The trip comes just as Mr Banks has been referred to the National Crime Agency in the United Kingdom over allegations of “impermissible sources” of funds used in the 2016 referendum.

The Electoral Commission, an independent body set up to ensure electoral rules are respected, said its investigation had focused on the £2-million reported to have been loaned to BFTC by Banks and his insurance companies.

A financier of the controversial Brexit movement that has torn the United Kingdom apart has been placed under investigation by the National Crime Agency looking at financial irregularities as well exactly where the money for the loan he made to the campaign came from.

At the recommendation of the Electoral Commission, Mr Banks is being investigated along with his Leave.EU campaign.

Banks was the source of £2.9 million of "regulated" campaign spending (the other £5 million was from outside the key period), which is nearly 20% of the entire pro-leave spend.

Banks, who has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, says he welcomed the investigation as it was an opportunity to clear his name.

Banks denies all the allegations, and as the matter has only today been referred to the National Crime Agency the investigation will likely go on for quite some time still. "Rock holdings is a company I own and control and I'm a United Kingdom tax payer, no Russian or foreign money has ever come into it".

"Of this money, "£2.9m was used to fund referendum spending on behalf of Leave.EU and donations to other campaign groups during the EU referendum", the statement said.

British police on Thursday (Nov 1) opened a criminal investigation into a top Brexit donor over his alleged use of offshore companies to finance the campaign to leave the European Union.

'These jurisdictions are beyond the reach of the Electoral Commission for the objective of obtaining information for use in criminal investigations or proceedings'.

"The financial transactions we have investigated include companies incorporated in Gibraltar and the Isle of Man", Posner said.

It was also looking at a reported £6m loaned to the organisation by Mr Banks alone.

In a statement, Banks said: "I am pleased that the Electoral Commission has referred me to the National Crime Agency".

"Our investigation relates to suspected electoral law offences covered by that referral, as well as any associated offences".

Key Brexiteer and Leave campaigner Arron Banks is facing a criminal investigation over suspicions he committed a series of crimes during the 2016 referendum campaign.

Though it does not usually investigate electoral law offences, "the nature of the necessary inquiries and the potential for offences to have been committed other than under electoral law lead us to consider an NCA investigation appropriate", the agency said.
