Kepler Telescope is Dead after Finding Thousands of Alien Worlds

"We know the spacecraft's retirement isn't the end of Kepler's discoveries", said Jessie Dotson, Kepler's project scientist at NASA's Ames Research Center. Meaning it found more planets lurking out there than even stars. These data will enable new scientific discoveries for years to come.

After its four-year primary mission, the spacecraft was repurposed to observe the stars near the zodiacal constellations. It worked by looking for the small and temporary dip in the brightness of stars, which are caused by orbiting exoplanets crossing in front of them. The fixes actually extended the life of the spacecraft, and allowed Kepler to survey more than 500,000 stars.

Kepler has retired from finding exoplanets that are orbiting distant stars, but the troves of data it has collected over the years will continue to help astronomers. The new mission was dubbed K2.

"Kepler has exceeded all of our expectations and paved the way for our exploration and search for life in the solar system and beyond", Thomas Zurbuchen, deputy director of NASA's Science Missions Department, said in a statement.

All NASA's data about these planets are now publicly available in the Barbara A. Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes.

"The search for exoplanets using the Kepler data is still underway".

The Kepler space telescope can not any more forage for planets orbiting other stars concluding the nine and half year mission representatives from the agency declared in a news conference.

Kepler is succeeded by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (Tess), which Nasa launched in April.

When the telescope was launched, it carried 12 liters of fuel for its engine, which was used to correct its drifts and control its orbit.

In NASA noted that the spacecraft does not threaten the Earth.

"That means they're located at distances from their parent stars where liquid water -- a vital ingredient to life as we know it -- might pool on the planet surface". NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, managed Kepler mission development.

The northeastern rim region of Hellas impact basin, located in the southern hemisphere of Mars, contained numerous ephemeral lakes throughout Mars' history, a new study reveals.

A super-computer at the International Space Station aims to bring "cloud" computing to astronauts in space and speed up their ability to run data analysis in orbit, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise said Thursday.
