McLaren reveal one-off livery for Fernando Alonso's final F1 race

Hamilton has nothing to prove after winning 10 races on the way to his fifth Formula One championship.

"Obviously I won the championship with them, as a driver".

He still had the satisfaction of out-qualifying team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne, completing a season whitewash over the Belgian.

In the past Hamilton has been accused of losing focus after sealing the title and this year is the first when he has won the next race after having done so.

Beyond the battle at the front, which is about little more than honour and a positive feeling going into the winter, the other focus of the weekend is McLaren's Fernando Alonso, who is bowing out of Formula 1 after this race.

"I'm so grateful for all the support we've had here", he said.

Having moved to McLaren in 2015, he has spent most of his time at the back of the grid and now finally bids the sport goodbye after spending 4 frustrating years. I honestly don't see what I should do differently'.

The numbers that reflect Hamilton's title this year make ominous reading for his rivals.

Williams engineering chief Rob Smedley said recently that any idea F1 cars could race as closely as touring cars "just won't happen, physics won't allow that to happen".

Hamilton laid down his marker with a superb run on the ultrasoft tyres in Q2.

Earlier, Verstappen was fastest in the first practice by about half a second. And when Mercedes switched to hypers for the final round, Hamilton and Bottas both went even quicker. Bottas was still over a tenth back and Vettel three-tenths.

"It was quite an emotional session for me because it's the last time I'll be qualifying in this vehicle", said the Hamilton. I've been so emotionally attached to this auto.

"In Q2 I think Lewis put in a really strong lap in on the harder tyres and I thought, 'It's going to be difficult!' It's never ever been ideal, neither of us as drivers, but collectively, as a team, I think we've really continued to elevate ourselves which is again inspiring for me, and that encourages me to go out there and not want to let them down". The last 11 years have not been easy. Romain Grosjean in the Haas was in seventh, with Sauber's Charles Leclerc in eighth. Esteban Ocon was ninth for Force India, while Hulkenberg ended up 10th.

Max Verstappen has explained why he described his Abu Dhabi Grand Prix qualifying session a "f**king disaster", believing a team error was to blame for his issues.
