Officer among multiple victims injured in shooting near Chicago hospital, police say

There are reports of a shooting at Mercy Hospital in Chicago.

A Chicago police officer was shot Monday during an "active shooter" incident at Mercy Hospital that reportedly left several other people injured.

Anthony Guglielmi, a Chicago police spokesman, said the officer was in critical condition and receiving treatment.

There are "reports of multiple victims", police say - but they have not given a number or said how severe the injuries are.

Multiple victims were reported, but it was not immediately clear how many people had been shot.

One witness said he saw a man with a gun shoot a woman multiple times in a parking lot at the hospital.

According to ABC Chicago, one suspect has been shot.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson were at police headquarters and were "monitoring the events unfolding at Mercy Hospital", officials said.

Correa said she was waiting in the lobby on her way up to the 12th floor, and officers told her to close the doors and stay quiet.

'I don't know what happened, ' she said.

"They told us to run so we did", one hospital employee said. Police are asking people to avoid the area.

TV footage showed people filing out of the hospital into a parking lot with their hands in the air.
