Over 400 Hurt in 6.3 Magnitude Earthquake in Western Iran

The temblor hit near Sarpol-e Zahab in Iran's Kermanshah province, which was the epicentre of an quake a year ago that killed over 600 people and where some still remain homeless.

According to Iran's state television, most of the injured were immediately released from hospitals and suffered only slight injuries in the quake. No fatalities were reported from the temblor. He said those injured were from rural areas and the situation was under control.

"There were power and water cuts in both cities, but they lasted only a few minutes". There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Sarpol-e Zahab resident Fariba Babayi described the fear that swept the city when the quake hit.

"I didn't run this time, even though my mother was out calling to me".

Media aired footage of damaged houses in the town of Sarpol-e Zahab, where some people still remain homeless following last year's 7.3 magnitude natural disaster.

It comes a year after a deadly natural disaster hit the area on November 12 2017, leaving hundreds of people dead and causing widespread damage.

News agency AFP journalists reported feeling the quake as far away as Baghdad in neighbouring Iraq.

Dozens of rescue teams, as well as the national army and Iran's Revolutionary Guards have been deployed, the authorities said.

No fatalities were reported yet from the November 25 quake, which occurred in the same area where a quake a year earlier killed more than 600 and injured more than 9,000 others.

Local officials said reconstruction undertaken after that strong quake should mean there would not be casualties.

There was criticism that new social housing built as part of a scheme championed by ex-president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had failed to withstand the tremor.

The initial quake, around seven kilometres deep, was followed by several aftershocks including one with a magnitude of 5.2.

Iran sits on top of two major tectonic plates and sees frequent seismic activity. In 2003, a magnitude 6.6 quake flattened the historic city of Bam in southern Iran, killing 31,000 people.
