Russian Federation to deploy new S-400 missiles in Crimea amid sky-high tensions

Moscow's announcement about new missiles follows its seizure of three Ukrainian naval vessels and their crews on Sunday over what it said was their illegal entry into Russian waters, an allegation Ukraine denies.

President Putin has lashed at Ukraine over its imposition of martial law, depicting it as a cynical pre-election ploy by the country's unpopular president while also mocking western countries over their "short-sighted" support for Kiev.

"I$3 just don't believe that President Trump is capable on these one-on-one meetings of conveying any form of criticism or setting any sort of boundaries", Merkley added.

Putin laid the blame on Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, saying that he ordered the navy to provoke the standoff with the sole goal of scoring political points and getting re-elected next year.

Ukraine introduced martial law in 10 of its 27 regions - including all of those that border Russia or have coastlines - after Russian coast guard craft rammed and fired on three Ukrainian Navy vessels off the Black Sea peninsula on November 25 before seizing the ships and detaining two dozen crew members, six of whom were wounded.

The episode risks derailing a meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin at the G20 in Argentina this week.

KIEV, Ukraine - Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Tuesday, November 27, warned of the threat of "full-scale war" and said Russian Federation had sharply increased its military presence on their shared border as tensions escalate between the ex-Soviet neighbors.

"That was a provocation which was certainly organized by the sitting officials, including the president, " ahead of Ukraine's presidential election in March, Putin said.

The US previously said Russia's deployment of the missile systems to Crimea was "not good".

The RIA Novosti news agency reported it would be in place by the end of the year, joining three other S-400 systems already on the peninsula.

He told The Washington Post: "Maybe I won't have the meeting".

The S-400 "Triumph" is Russia's latest and most advanced anti-aircraft and missile defense system.

The comments were Trump's strongest to date in condemnation of Russia's recent actions in Eastern Ukraine, where tensions are flaring.

The two leaders are expected to address the mounting tensions between the Kremlin and Ukraine.

"We don't have any other information from [U.S. officials]", he said when asked about Trump's comments. "Maybe I won't have the meeting".

Nine more Ukrainian sailors captured during Sunday's confrontation with Russia in a strait next to Crimea have been sent to jail for two months by a Russian court. It makes the Ukrainian leadership complacent, gives them no incentive to do normal political work in their country or pursue a normal economic policy. "What they are saying now is not true", he told Ukrainian media.
