Thiem beats Nishikori to keep semis hopes alive — ATP Finals

He was off his game and out of sorts.

Federer's management team launched the Laver Cup in 2017 with the support of Tennis Australia. It'll get better. And it did.

At this stage of his career, Federer has learned not to get ahead of himself. The top two in each group progress to the knockout semifinals. The Austrian did not disappoint the expectations of the first racket of Africa and won in two sets (6:1, 6:4).

Federer's win means he tops the group, leaving Anderson likely to face the in-form world No 1 Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals on Saturday.

Federer was responding to controversial comments from French veteran Julien Benneteau, who said the 20-time grand slam champion was able to use his reputation to secure favourable scheduling.

Craig Tiley, the tournament's director, says that Federer's frequent night sessions are to appease fans, who wish to witness one of tennis' all-time greats at peak hours for the sport. "In all fairness, I hope you understand why, because this is a bit of a celebration for tennis".

I didn't think of taking a day off, to be honest, after the Nishikori match.

"I was just not happy at the end of the tournament in Australia because they changed the rules, "Cilic said".

"Among the best I've played", Anderson said. He further admitted that the situation is exciting, for sure.

Maybe it was the thought of a small measure of revenge that got Federer's blood going Thursday.

Federer - a six-time ATP Finals champion - was first to strike against the head, racing to 0-40 on the Anderson serve at 3-3 before the South African gave the game away with a double fault. The only two disappointments according to Federer are his losses in the two majors.

Despite the win, Thiem was later eliminated from the event.

He lost his first game of the tournament at the O2 Arena, being beaten in straight sets by Kei Nishikori.

"Important for me is to play a good last match here in the round-robin, try to beat Kevin".

A confident Anderson pushed hard early on and had a glimmer of a chance in the sixth game but Federer held from 0-30 with a sublime backhand victor that ripped past his opponent and had the crowd roaring its approval. Less is more, he has said.

Thiem served to stay in the match, netting on the first point.

The breaks have allowed him to reset his mind. But I've got to be very, very focused the moment I step on court for the practice, the warm-up.

"I've always tried to pace myself in a way, set up my schedule in a way that I would have something left in the tank, I would peak at this event".

"If I would have known that past year, this would have been the season [I would have], I would have taken it", Federer said, as quoted on Tennis World USA.
