Tumblr App Has Inexplicably Disappeared From Apple's App Store

Content safeguards are a challenging aspect of operating scaled platforms.

Basically, those who had the iOS app installed said they can't do a search with Safe Mode off, and those who uninstalled the app for whatever reason were complaining the app is nowhere to be found on the App Store.

Since then, it's been updated to let Apple users know that they are actively working to get it back into the iOS App Store once the issue has been resolved.

Per Apple's App Store Review Guidelines, objectionable content includes content that's "offensive, insensitive, upsetting, meant to disgust, or in exceptionally poor taste".

In its statement, it said that all images uploaded to Tumblr pass through a database of "known child sexual abuse material". A routine audit discovered content on our platform that had not yet been included in the industry database.

"Every image uploaded to Tumblr is scanned against an industry database of known child sexual abuse material, and images that are detected never reach the platform".

The company removed the offending content immediately and the gap in content monitoring is being tackled.

Many have pointed out that Tumblr may only be able to provide limited details about the incident as the nature of it requires the firm to work with law enforcement officials.

Tumblr is a microblogging social networking website where users post "tumblelog" or short blog posts.

Since distribution of child pornography is a criminal matter, it explains why this app was removed as swiftly as it was.

In 2017, South Korea called on the company to remove pornographic content from its site - a request it initially rebuffed, but later complied to.

As 9to5 Mac noted, the issue may have something to do with inappropriate content that violated Apple's guidelines, which has led Apple to pull apps before.

These common topics of conversation often reveal key information about a child, including: name, age/date of birth, school name and even their appearance.
