USA report into Khashoggi murder will reveal ‘who did it’

Trump confirms the US has the recording, which was provided by Turkey.

The CIA has concluded that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had ordered the killing of Khashoggi, who was outspoken critic of the Saudi leadership. Saudi Arabia's top diplomat has said the crown prince had "absolutely" nothing to do with it.

President Trump told Fox News on Sunday that he was fully briefed on Jamal Khashoggi's murder. "Most of these people are in prison other than the crown prince".

"He did have, certainly, people that were reasonably close to him and close to him that were probably involved", the president added.

This has been a recurring aspect of U.S. treatment of the recording, with all top officials seemingly going out of their way not to hear it so they don't have to speak to its contents publicly.

He declined to say if evidence the crown prince was involved would alter relations with Riyadh. "But at the same time, we do have an ally and I want to stick with an ally that in many ways has been very good". Mr Trump said he would not listen to it "because it's a suffering tape, it's a bad tape".

"I want to see Yemen end". "It takes two to tango and Iran has to end also".

He further underscored Saudi-US ties while mentioning that the US has "a great ally in Saudi Arabia".

"There remain numerous unanswered questions with respect to the murder of Mr. Khashoggi", she added.

Mr. Trump and other administration officials have repeatedly said that they want to punish those responsible for the murder but they have also avoided blaming the Crown Prince and showed resistance to taking a tough stand on Saudi Arabia, which is a US ally and buyer of American arms.

Khashoggi was forcibly restrained and injected with a large amount of a drug resulting in an overdose that led to his death, alleged the Saudi prosecutors, who has sought death penalty for 11 of its officials.

A Saudi-backed hit squad flew on a state-owned plane to kill Khashoggi, according to reports, and dismembered him inside the consulate. Riyadh first claimed that it was unaware of the fate of the journalist, who was critical of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (also known as MbS) in his articles.

In the latest version presented by the Saudi prosecutor on Thursday, a 15-member squad was formed to bring Khashoggi back from Istanbul "by means of persuasion" - but instead ended up killing the journalist and dismembering his body in a "rogue" operation.

In the audio, a Saudi consul general expressed displeasure that Khashoggi's body would have to be disposed of and the facility cleaned of any evidence, people familiar with the audio recording said. The Saudis deny that Mohammed Bin Salman ordered that Khashoggi be whacked, which is laughable, since no one would dare do such a thing without his orders.

He said the last contact he'd had with Khashoggi was via text in October 2017.
