Atlanta Falcons Will Not Face Cam Newton in Week 16

Panthers head coach Ron Rivera confirmed that quarterback Cam Newton will not play against the Falcons this Sunday due to the right shoulder injury that's been hampering him in recent weeks.

Second-string quarterback Taylor Heincke will start in his absence while third-striger Kyle Allen will be Heincke's backup. "He understood our thinking behind this and he's disappointed, he's frustrated".

Heinicke has attempted five National Football League passes, two of which were Hail Mary attempts he came on for this season because Newton couldn't.

"We had the opportunity to visit with the doctors, the trainers and Cam himself". Cam Newton is clearly hurt, and while it is still unclear whether he will opt for another offseason surgery, what is clear that this is an injury that is going to take time to heal and will only get worse if he continues to play in the state he is in now. He wants to play. "We had a great conversation, he understands going forward what we have to do".

Newton was largely ineffective in Monday night's 12-9 loss to the New Orleans Saints. He's stepped in to throw a few Hail Mary passes this season for the Panthers because Newton's shoulder wasn't strong enough to get the ball down the field.

Newton arrived at practice Wednesday without a helmet and wearing sweats.

Newton is not out for the season.

Center Ryan Kalil feels shutting down Newton is the prudent approach for the organization.

It was time to shut Newton down, which the Panthers finally did Wednesday - at least for this week's game against Atlanta. "I think it is important to get that right, especially at his position".

"It keeps guys on their toes now", Wright said.

Despite the soreness in his shoulder, Newton has completed a career-best 67.9 percent of his passes under new offensive coordinator Norv Turner.

Heinicke has been appeared in six games and thrown just five passes since joining the league in 2015 with the Vikings.
