Drake picks up seven Grammy nominations, Shawn Mendes gets two nods

The move did appear to have a positive effect for female artists, with five of the Album of the Year nominees going to women: Cardi B, Carlile, R&B singer Janelle Monae, R&B prodigy H.E.R. and country songstress Kacey Musgraves.

The Grammys is the first where the academy extended its top four categories from five nominees to eight.

Thanks to the hit "Black Panther" film Lamar - whose album "DAMN" won the Pulitzer Prize for music this year - once again has a chance to win the coveted Album of the Year prize after three prior losses. Still, for top record, count Cardi B, Carlile, Lady Gaga and SZA as official contenders.

Drake is right behind Kendrick with 7 nominations.

Mendes scored two nominations for song of the year for "In My Blood" and best pop vocal album.

Six of the eight 2019 nominees for Best New Artist are women. It's that time of year where music's brightest stars from all genres get judged for the music they put out this year by the one and only Recording Academy. The Grammy Academy announced 900 additional members to the voting committee as a second step in its diversity efforts.

Women are also dominating in the Album of the Year section, and we're proud to see breakout artists H.E.R. and Tierra Whack pop up in a few spots as well.

This year, the rapper received just one nomination for Producer of the Year in the non-classical category.

Perry will compete with Pharrell Williams, Boi-1Da, Larry Klein and Kanye West, the only nomination he earned. Their direct competitors are Gregory Porter, for Nat "King" Cole & Me, as well as Seal, Barbra Streisand and Willie Nelson, for albums largely featuring songbook standards. The OVO superstar's Scorpion is also in the Album Of The Year race.

Beyonce and Jay-Z, billed as The Carters, as well Ariana Grande, didn't earn any of the big nominations. That's because her two Grammy nods a year ago disqualify her from a best new artist award.

For his smash self-titled LP, Shawn Mendes is in the running for best pop vocal album.

Lady Gaga's nominations came mostly from her single "Shallow" with actor-director Bradley Cooper from their movie A Star is Born, which won five Golden Globe nods on Thursday.

"Everything Is Love" was nominated for Best Urban Contemporary Album. Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Fred Armisen, Jim Gaffigan and Patton Oswalt are up for best comedy album.

Mac Miller, who died of an accidental overdose earlier this year, received his first-ever Grammy nomination for his album "Swimming", according to Billboard. Chris Cornell, who died previous year, is up for best rock performance with "When Bad Does Good".
