G20 Summit: May 'encourages' Saudi Arabia to co-operate in murder investigation

Both Russian president Vladimir Putin and crown prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman are in Buenos Aires this weekend.

Macron also came face-to-face with the Saudi crown prince, and an official said the tense exchange captured on video shows the president's firm stance.

Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist, disappeared inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Citing a classified CIA assessment, the Journal said on Saturday it had reviewed excerpts of an intelligence file that was classified as "highly confidential", which cites electronic intercepts and other covert information between Prince Mohammed and his aide, Saud al-Qahtani.

Around 85,000 children under the age of five have starved to death in Yemen in the last three-and-a-half years as a result of the civil war there, Save the Children said.

The Saudi strongman and his Russian counterpart - who've each been accused of having political enemies assassinated - clasped hands, with Salman repeatedly patting Putin's right hand with his left as they exchanged greetings and yucked it up.

US intelligence agencies have concluded the crown prince ordered Khashoggi's killing.

Earlier on Friday, Prince Mohammed met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and told him about plans to scale up investments in India's tech, farm and energy sectors, an Indian official and the Saudi news agency (SPA) said on Friday. The kingdom denies the crown prince had any knowledge of the killing. Trump said in a written statement on 20 November.

The CIA has said that Prince Mohammed, Saudi Arabia's de facto leader, ordered the murder.

The killing of Khashoggi, a USA resident who wrote for the Washington Post, has emerged as the most serious threat to American-Saudi ties since at least the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.

But he added: "I have read every piece of intelligence that is in the possession of the United States government, and when it is done, when you complete that analysis, there's no direct evidence linking [Prince Mohammed] to the murder of Jamal Khashoggi".

Asked if he had talked to bin Salman on Friday, Trump replied: "We had no discussion".

"China firmly supports Saudi Arabia in its push for economic diversification and social reforms, and provides mutual support on issues involving their core interests", he continued.
