Grand Forks Kmart to close in March

The iconic but now bankrupt chain announced Friday it was closing 80 more Sears and Kmart stores.

As Sears faces liquidation, Chairman Eddie Lambert is expected to file a $4.6 million proposal to save the company in the last minutes of Friday's bidding deadline.

Plans to close 80 additional stores were unveiled Friday, bringing the total number of closings to more than 260, which is over a third of its almost 700 stores. That's in addition to 182 stores already slated for closure, including 142 by the end of 2018 and 40 by February. Lansing's Sears has dodged another round of closings.

The 80 stores are due to close by March.

The stores set to close early next year consist of 43 Sears and 37 Kmart stores, including Kmart stores in Queensbury, Horseheads, Wellsville and Greenwich, N.Y. With its closure in March, there will be no more full-line Sears department stores left in Minnesota. The Columbus store is not on the Sears Holdings list of those to be closed.

Spokespersons for both Sears and ESL declined to comment. "Even with an approved bid, the company is heading for another iceberg and will sink before the winter weather is gone".

Some Sears creditors, including landlords and vendors, believe shutting down the company is the best way to retrieve the greatest portion of the money Sears owes them.

Also, the Sears at Westmoreland Mall on Route 30, just outside of Greensburg, will shut its doors as well. "We continue to believe that Sears' integrated and complementary businesses and brands can form the framework of a successful platform after emerging from bankruptcy".

Sears will also close its store in Oconomowoc.
