Longtime star Beltran joins Yankees as special adviser

After Aaron Boone was hired, Beltran said he turned down an adviser/assistant role with the team.

During the final season of his distinguished playing career, Carlos Beltran was a Houston Astros designated hitter with a desire to rejoin the Yankees in some capacity.

Manny Machado is among the biggest names in Major League Baseball free agent market this winter.

Despite spending more time with the Kansas City Royals and the New York Mets, and winning a World Series with the Astros, Beltran has been connected to the Yankees since his retirement after the 2017 season. But Beltran will be there and ready to ask some questions of Machado.

But after the managing job went to Boone, "I made a decision to go back to my initial plans of being retired for a year", Beltran said. As Feinsand notes, one of his first assignments could well be to help the Yanks lure Manny Machado, who shares an agent with Beltran. But Beltran declined to join the front office at that time.

Machado and his representatives are meeting with the Yankees on Wednesday in NY.

Still, the Yankees haven't hid their interest in Machado, 26, who could fill the current vacancy at shortstop and slide over to third base when Didi Gregorius recovers from Tommy John surgery. My job will have nothing to do with Machado´s situation.

All I can say is, the Yankees better hope what he did in the latter part of the 2018 isn't a mirage and that he'll carry that over into 2019. He is happy to be back in NY. "But I did tell Cashman that I am available to help in whatever is needed and also with the recruitment of Machado if that is necessary", reported ESPN.

Beltran's only been a Yankees employee for a few days but he's already willing to do whatever it takes for the team.
