Nauert to Become Next UN Ambassador

The latter is Trump's favorite cable news network, which helped her land the State Department job.

President Trump is expected to announce Friday that he has chosen Heather Nauert, the State Department spokeswoman and a former Fox News host, to become the next ambassador to the United Nations, a senior administration official tells NPR's Tamara Keith. "I did not know him until recently when I went through the process of looking at people and he was my first choice from day one, respected by Republicans and respected by Democrats".

She has been chief spokeswoman for the State Department since April past year, having been poached from Fox. Nauert's only experience in government, meanwhile, is her current position with the Department of State - which is important to note.

Heritage Foundation fellow Brett Schaefer said Nauert has proven she has the ability to explain and defend USA foreign policy, the core requirement for being a us ambassador to the world body. He has said that Mr Trump "made the right call" when he fired James Comey as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and that he saw more merit in investigating donations to the Clinton Foundation than claims of...

While Nauert will be a leading administration voice on Trump's foreign policy, a White House official told The Associated Press that her post would be a non-Cabinet position. "Many of our students choose a path of service to others, so we are thrilled to have played a part in Heather Nauert's impressive career and wish her success in her new role", Zinnar-Shavit said in an e-mail. She oversaw public diplomacy in Washington and all of the roughly 275 overseas U.S. embassies, consulates and other posts.

According to Benjamin, who is director of the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding at Dartmouth University, Nauert is the least-qualified candidate to ever be named to the United Nations post.

Because of her inexperience in diplomacy and short political resume, Nauert may face difficulty securing the job. Aides on the Senate Foreign Relations and Judiciary committees - which would take up the ambassador and attorney general nominations, respectively - said Friday that neither committee will hold confirmation hearings this year, given the limited time left before a new Senate takes over on January 3. In a sign of the difficulties the administration has had, the UN General Assembly on Thursday rejected a US -sponsored resolution condemning Hamas, the Islamist group that has ruled the Gaza Strip since 2007. With Mike Pompeo in charge of State, Nauert has been on the road much more.

Before joining the State Department, Nauert was an anchor and correspondent at Fox News.

"Pompeo's Brussels speech trashing the United Nations this week lowered our expectations for USA policy at the United Nations, whoever is ambassador", Gowan said.
