NHL Announces Expansion to Seattle for 2021-22 Season

A deal to move the Arizona Coyotes to the Central Division is part of the Seattle expansion package that was to be voted on at the league's Board of Governor's meetings on Tuesday, according to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, who added, "And it will pass".

That's Detroit's share of the $650 million expansion fee that Texas private equity billionaire David Bonderman, 76, will pay to own the NHL's 32nd franchise.

Judging on early graphics created by the NHL Seattle group, it appears that the new team will use red and black as its colors. The team will follow the same expansion draft rules as Vegas did in 2017, selecting a player from each club (except for Vegas) for 30 total players. The logic behind the BOG's decision is simple: Seattle's arrival would put the Pacific Division at nine teams while the Central would still have seven.

The following two tabs change content below. Las Vegas will be exempt from the draft because of its relatively new standing in the league (it began play just last season), so Seattle will be picking players from the exact same number of teams the Golden Knights did.

The NHL is coming to Seattle. Strong ownership led by billionaire David Bonderman and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, a downtown arena in a sports-crazed city and a season-ticket drive that drummed up 10,000 orders in 12 minutes all cleared the way for the National Hockey League to add another team less than three years after approving a franchise in Las Vegas.

"There's going to be a built-in rivalry (with Vancouver)", said Tod Leiweke, Seattle Hockey Partners president and CEO.

Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan took a bit of the suspense away by making the announcement to the crowd about 10 minutes before the official word came from Commissioner Gary Bettman.

Seattle is the largest USA city without a major winter sports team since the NBA's SuperSonics left in 2008. The ownership group, the plans for the arena - it's all of the above.

Western Conference Finals Stanley Cup Finals (such an unprecedented accomplishment for an expansion team that my memory of how far the Knights' run went was initially incorrect because it still seems like insane talk).

A lot about Seattle is different from 2008, when the Sonics moved to Oklahoma City. Perhaps most notable is that in addition to housing the NHL team, the facility will also host adult and youth hockey, training camps, tournaments, figure skating and public ice skating.
