North Korea state media says denuclearisation includes 'eliminating USA nuclear threat'

Kim declared his nuclear force was complete after the torrent of weapons tests in 2017, including the detonation of a purported thermonuclear weapon and three test-flights of intercontinental ballistic missiles potentially capable of reaching the US mainland. North Korea is one of the world's poorest nations, and many of its citizens suffer from chronic malnutrition and shortages of medical care.

Trump arrived in Singapore directly following a hectic G7 summit in Canada, where the president withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and from the Paris Agreement.

"The U.S. should recognize the meaning of the term 'denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, ' and should especially get right to work studying geography", the statement reads.

Moon Jae-in administration has been putting its efforts into maintaining the momentum of dialogue between Pyongyang and Washington as a mediator considering that improved inter-Korean ties will help the denuclearization talks.

At a press briefing in Washington on Tuesday, US State Department spokesman Robert Palladino said he would not "split words" when asked about whether the promise of "denuclearization of the Korean peninsula" means only North Korea or the broader region.

SEOUL - North Korea's commitment to the "denuclearization of the Korean peninsula" also includes "completely eliminating the USA nuclear threat to Korea", North Korean state media said on Thursday.

The commentary puts a greater spotlight on the U.S.

A banner with the image of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is seen as members of a South Korean conservative civic group take part in an anti-North Korea protest in Seoul, South Korea, Dec. 8, 2018.

It remains unknown whether Biegun will meet other South Korean officials.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo voiced hope Thursday that a second summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un can be scheduled for early 2019.

The blast, which came weeks after the country fired off two intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) that appeared to bring much of the mainland U.S. into range, prompted global condemnation and calls to ramp up sanctions against the isolated nation. "The United States continues to work with the worldwide community to raise awareness, highlight abuses and violations, promote access to independent information, and keep pressure on (North Korea) to respect human rights".

Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon said at a meeting with reporters on Tuesday that whether the USA and North Korea make a progress in their denuclearization negotiations will affect the course of the regional dynamics surrounding North Korea in the future, according to Yonhap News. In Thursday's statement, the North reiterated its traditional stance on denuclearization and accused Washington of misleading what had been agreed on in Singapore.

The latest from North Korea comes as the United States and North Korea struggle over the sequencing of the denuclearisation that Washington wants and the removal of global sanctions desired by Pyongyang.

John Feffer, director of Foreign Policy in Focus, disagrees.

Tensions have gradually eased since early this year, when Kim abruptly reached out to the United States and South Korea with an offer to negotiate away his advancing nuclear arsenal. I don't think I have to prepare very much.
