Partial US Government Shutdown Looms

Democrats have proposed funding of $1.6 billion for fencing upgrades and enhanced border security measures, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Sunday it was up to Trump to decide whether the shutdown goes ahead, and federal government workers have to go home without pay during the Christmas holidays.

As Washington barreled towards a shuttering of key federal agencies in just four days, the White House appeared dug in on Trump's call for Congress to budget $5 billion in 2019 to fund a wall on the US-Mexico border that he insists will check illegal immigration.

As Republicans now control congress, it would be up to the GOP and Trump to find a way forward. The House does not meet until this Wednesday evening, leaving little time before funding for the Department of Homeland Security and Justice Department expires Friday at midnight. The Democrat Party has a simple choice, they can either choose to fight for America's working class or to promote illegal immigration.

"The Trump shutdown is something that can be avoided, that the American people do not need at this time of economic uncertainty, people losing jobs, the market in a mood and the rest", Pelosi told reporters after meeting with Trump.

Last week a defiant Trump alarmed Democrats, and some in his Republican Party, when he said he would be "proud" to shutter the government over border security.

The fact sheet, which outlines the projected impacts of a shutdown, estimates that the vast majority of employees at the Department of Homeland Security would be among those required to work without pay during a shutdown, including tens of thousands of Customs and Border Protection agents and customs officers. Chuck Schumer said that President Donald Trump needs to understand he was not going to get his wall "in any form" because he doesn't have the votes.

"After the president's comments earlier this week when he said he was going to own the shutdown, that sealed the deal for Democrats. You can't do both", Mr. Miller said of Democrats in an interview Sunday with CBS.

Six of 15 government departments - representing about three-quarters of discretionary spending - are funded through September 30, 2019, under legislation passed and signed by Trump earlier this year.

In a new shutdown, about 380,000 federal workers could be furloughed.

Trump was back rage tweeting about it on Monday morning, misspellings and all. "Chairman Shelby has said we shouldn't shut down the government".

Before, during, and after his public debate with Pelosi and Schumer, Trump remained steadfast that border security is nonexistent without a physical structure. And a good way to show that you're exhausted of people trying to take away your health care is to go get covered!

"There's absolutely no excuse to shut down government on this issue or any other issue, " the ME lawmaker said on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday.

Trump last week said he would proudly shut down the government if money is not included for his wall. "So, I will take the mantle".

"I'm not going to negotiate the details on air with you right now", he told Brennan.
