Trump Justice pick likely to be queried on Mueller comments

Okay, but what people really want to know about Barr is where he stands on the Robert Mueller probe, since he could potentially use his position to interfere if not cancel the entire operation.

Barr served on the board of Time Warner, which was seeking to merge with AT&T.

Nauert, who did not have a good relationship with Tillerson and had considered leaving the department, told associates at the time she was taken aback by the promotion offer and recommended a colleague for the job.

Paul McNulty, who worked at the Justice Department under Barr and a decade later became deputy attorney general, recalled him as decisive on the need for a strong federal response after the riots in Los Angeles following the acquittals on state charges of police officers involved in the Rodney King beating. Sessions' chief of staff, Matthew Whitaker, was elevated to acting attorney general and took control of Mueller's investigation. The Washington Post reports that Trump pressed Barr on what he would do with the Mueller investigation, including whether or not he would recuse himself.

To start, he is young, successful and seen as legitimate by the establishment Republicans and conservatives who are not die-hard fans of Trump.

Mr. Barr "will be nominated for the United States Attorney-General and hopefully that process will go very quickly", Mr. Trump said before boarding Marine One this morning en route to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.

In a May 2017 op-ed for The Washington Post, Barr defended Trump's decision to fire FBI Director James Comey, an action Mueller has been examining for possible obstruction of justice.

The president is weighing a number of other end-of-year staff changes, including replacing Chief of Staff John Kelly, two of Trump's advisers said on Thursday.

"To the extent it is not pursuing these matters, the department is abdicating its responsibility", Barr told the newspaper.

Chuck Cooper, Sessions' lawyer, also praised the pick, saying Barr served "honorably and well, earning the respect of people on both sides of the aisle".

William Barr has not widely expressed a public opinion on cannabis issues since the early 90s, and therefore, little is known about how he will ultimately approach the cannabis industry, if his nomination is confirmed.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley is applauding the move.

Barr, a Republican and corporate lawyer, served as attorney general from 1991 to 1993 under President George H.W. Bush.

Barr was also involved with some controversial pardons of people involved in the Iran-Contra scandal at the tail end of the Bush administration - a particularly concerning sign since Trump could very well try to use his pardon powers to help associates, including Paul Manafort, who've been caught up in the Russian Federation probe.
