Trump says shutdown will continue until his border wall demand is met

Democrats oppose spending money on a wall, preferring instead to pump the dollars into fencing, technology and other means of controlling access to the border. But these workers are not likely to receive any compensation until it ends, and legislation will need to be passed to pay them retroactively.

Trump has long demanded 5 billion USA dollars for the border wall, a centerpiece of his 2016 campaign, but Democrats were only willing to approve a funding of 1.3 billion dollars to enhance border security.

A sign is displayed at the National Archives building that is closed because of a US government shutdown in Washington, Dec. 22, 2018.

When Margaret Weichert, a deputy director at the Office of Management and Budget, tweeted that federal employees would receive their paychecks on Friday - covering the days they worked until the shutdown last Saturday - a government employee named Craig slapped back. The White House has not yet provided further information on this new section of the wall.

Trump's tweet was not taken well by many as they felt that the United States president was just throwing a tantrum.

"So President Trump, if you want to open the government, you must abandon the wall, plain and simple", Schumer said.

The partial shutdown, which began Saturday, was triggered by a lapse in funding for a quarter of the government's departments and agencies.

I am all alone (poor me) in the White House waiting for the Democrats to come back and make a deal on desperately needed Border Security.

"There may be a case of an Olympic champion who may get over the wall, but for the most part, you're not going to be able to do it", Trump quipped.

The Senate and House are scheduled to come into session on Thursday, but with no deal in hand, lawmakers remained away from Washington for the holidays.

It affects some 800,000 government workers. About 8 in 10 employees of the National Park Service are staying home, and many parks have closed.

"If we are considered essential employees all leave is automatically canceled". State highway workers were sent to the area Monday to erect "no parking" signs along US 70 outside the monument.

"These federal workers want the wall", he added.

The president also claimed that "many" of the shutdown's furloughed workers, who are not being pad while the federal government remains partially closed, want him to keep it shuttered until he receives the wall funding.

"It's a disgrace, what's happening in this country", Trump said. He hoped for more information the following day at work, but said "as of right now, I do not know much of anything". "It's stressful for staff, it's stressful for inmates, and the government shutdown and not knowing if you're going to get a paycheck in a couple of weeks is an unneeded stress", he said.
