Tue. 8:26 am: OSU coach Meyer retiring after Rose Bowl

His last game with OSU is the Rose Bowl against Washington on New Year's Day.

We will update this story as more information becomes available.

Michael Thomas, a receiver who plays for the New Orleans Saints, tweeted that he sheds a tear when thinking about the impact Meyer had on his life and others.

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, a three-time national champion and future College Football Hall of Famer, announced his retirement at a 2 p.m. ET press conference on Tuesday.

He heads into the game with an 82-9 record during his Ohio State tenure, including a flawless record over archrival MI.

Meyer's health issues could be one of the reasons for his retirement.

In addition to the domestic abuse scandal, Meyer "has been slowed by headaches caused by a cyst", member station WOSU reports, adding, "The chatter increased after he looked more distressed and beleaguered than usual on the sideline during the 49-20 loss to unranked Purdue on October 20". Offensive coordinator Ryan Day will take over as head coach the next day.

Meyer's time in Florida over six years included two national championships. He's an Ohio State guy to his core. Gene Smith alluded to his continued involvement in the team, while Day said his door would always be open to the former coach.

Urban Meyer has never had a losing season as a head coach, and he owns an.853 career winning percentage with a 186-32 record. However, his time on the sidelines is ending on January 1, 2019, after he coaches the Buckeyes in the Rose Bowl. Plus, the more I think about it, I'm just not sure Meyer makes sense in the NFL. Will he be looking for a path back to the National Football League as a defensive coordinator, with Meyer gone? As the 2017 victor of the most prestigious award in college football, Murray's former teammate, Baker Mayfield, is now a lifetime Heisman voter.

"It's a complicated question, and I'll try to answer it the best I can", Meyer said.

A big part of being a college coach is recruiting, and Day has shown he is willing to go far and wide to find prospects.

It started with him being placed on administrative leave back in July after reports surfaced that he was aware of spousal abuse allegations involving Zach Smith, an assistant coach on his staff, a claim he vehemently denied but eventually led to a three-game suspension by the university.
