Who is Catriona Gray, Miss Universe 2018?

The judges on the panel for 2018 were Miss New Jersey USA 2004 Janaye Ingram, fashion designer Monique Lhuillier, Miss Universe 1992 from Namibia Michelle McLean, scientist and former beauty pageant victor Iman Oubou, Miss Universe 1988 from Thailand Bui Simon, entrepreneur Liliana Gil Valletta and architect Richelle Singson-Michael.

The new Miss Universe beat out 93 other hopefuls in a star-studded competition, including runner-up Miss South Africa Tamaryn Green and the 2nd runner-up, Miss Venezuela Sthefany Gutiérrez.

On Sunday, Harvey asked Miss Costa Rica - herself a TV host like Harvey - whether she had any professional advice for him. "Philippines, you have endlessly inspired me".

Her mother, Normita Magnayon, comes from Oas town, Albay in the Philippines, while her father was born in Scotland.

In the final round, Gray earned applause describing her work in the slums of the Philippine capital Manila.

"So spreading awareness on that cause and encouraging people to get the simple test and knowing their status is definitely one of my first projects that I'd like to pursue".

But as we all know, beauty pageants also go deeper than their contestants' most obviously lovely features, and there is far more to Catriona Gray than immediately meets the eye.

Past Miss Universe winners from the Philippines have extended their hearty congratulations to Catriona Gray, the Miss Universe 2018.

"I always say: having a v***** didn't transform me into a woman".

"I'm competing because it's what I've wanted to do since I was a little girl", Ponce told Time ahead of the competition.

She responded: "If they ever give you, like, a really, really, really important envelope, try to read carefully, OK?"

So that was Philippines reign in Miss Universe pageant history.

Then there was also an air of controversy laced throughout the competition as two contestants failed to make it into the top ten after "xenophobic" and "condescending" comments she made on her Instagram account about another contestant.

But issues of tolerance and respect came centre stage during the competition when Miss USA Sarah Rose Summers appeared to poke fun at Miss Vietnam and Miss Cambodia on social media for not being able to speak English. She too congratulated Catriona Gray by saying, "Amazing!"
