William and Kate pay tribute to Leicester helicopter victims

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have paid tribute to Leicester City owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha and four others who died with him in an October 27 helicopter crash outside the football team's stadium.

The couple will visit the crash site, meet players and hear about charities supported by Mr Vichai later, before heading to the University of Leicester.

William was seen clasping the hand of Vichai's son Aiyawatt before talking to his wife Aimon and daughter Aroonroong.

"My thoughts today are with the family and friends of Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha and all the victims of the awful crash at Leicester City Football Club", he said. In their memory, flowers and messages have been left near King Power Stadium.

Kate and William, as president of the Football Association and a keen fan of the game, chatted to players before leaving a signed card of condolence.

During a speech at the stadium, Prince William said: "We knew Vichai as a man who cared deeply about his family and also his community".

Both the Duke and Duchess visited the city as they wanted to recognise the warmth and compassion that the people of Leicester and fans of Leicester City Football Club have shown in reaction to the accident.

"He, of course, was a man of wealth, but that wealth did not leave him disconnected from those around him".

In the days following the fatal crash, William released a statement via Kensington Palace, saying, "I was lucky to have known Vichai for several years".

"In 2016, this football club did something that should have been impossible".

The other four victims were club employees Nursara Suknamai and Kaveporn Punpare and pilot Eric Swaffer and his partner Izabela Roza Lechowicz, also a professional pilot.
