Ailing Tway surges into lead at Sentry in Hawaii

The Tournament of Champions is an elite US$6.5 million ($9.2m) event for winners on the PGA Tour from the previous year and features no 36-hole cut.

The PGA Tour kicked off its 2019 schedule Thursday at the Sentry Tournament of Champions at the Plantation Course in Maui, HI and Kevin Tway started about as well as he could have wanted.

Gary Woodland was tied for second at 67 with Justin Thomas, the 2017 victor here who birdied five of the final seven holes, and defending champion Dustin Johnson.

It was Kizzire's first ace on the PGA Tour and he told Golf Channel: "I was just trying to hit the green".

"I'm in a pretty good spot off the golf course". I drove it well, kept the ball in play, hit a lot of greens and made some good putts. The marshal had it marked, said it went in the hazard right there, and there was a ball right there and it was a TaylorMade. "I got some pills and feel a little bit better today but still a little dizzy". "Definitely going to get horizontal, probably take some more medicine and sleep a lot, which I'm good at", he said with a smile.

Tway, the son of eight-time PGA Tour victor and major champion Bob, carded seven birdies and no bogeys to lead by one over former world No.1s Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas, as well as big-big-hitting Gary Woodland (all 67).

The 29-year-old Irishman, one of nine newcomers, is reducing his European Tour commitments in an effort to add to his four major titles.

It was the first tournament day where the players experienced the new rules introduced by the R & A and the USGA, with a few players choosing to putt with the flagstick left in, notably Bryson DeChambeau, an advocate of putting with the flag in place, who did it even from close range.

Ian Poulter began his week with a two-under 71 and Paul Casey sits in the group on level-par alongside Open Champion Francesco Molinari, while world No 1 Brooks Koepka started with a three-over 76.

It still will depend on Woodland, a three-time victor on the PGA Tour who wants more victories to show for his improved all-around game.

Three players - Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Justin Rose - qualified but are not playing.

"I missed another shot putt on 9, but then I chipped in on 12 and that got me going".

"If I've got an eight-footer to win, I can't take myself seriously if I have the pin in", the 2017 PGA Championship victor told reporters.
