Ariana Grande’s Japanese tattoo reads ‘barbecue grill’ instead of ‘7 Rings’

Ariana Grande’s Japanese tattoo reads ‘barbecue grill’ instead of ‘7 Rings’

Instead of spelling out 7 Rings after her single as planned, the inked symbols actually read "shichirin", which translates to a small Japanese barbecue grill.

The tattoo was posted on Instagram by Los Angeles based tattoo artist Kanen Avasard, who wrote: 'If you didn't know, @arianagrande is a G. According to critics, Grande's response that her tattoo "still looks tight" shows that she sees Japanese culture as an aesthetic to borrow from, and doesn't respect it enough to try to get the language right.

She jokingly added, "Also.... huge fan of tiny bbq grills". She's since deleted those tweets, however.

Ariana Grande is indisputably one of the most influential pop stars in the world at the moment, while her latest single, '7 Rings, ' caused pandemonium on the internet when it dropped and even got Soulja Boy's attention.

"It was a... challenging fall day in New York", Grande told Billboard, recalling the day she purchased the rings.

The track will feature on Ari's forthcoming fifth studio album Thank U, Next, which follows on from her most recent LP, 2018's Sweetener. She continued, "That's why we have these, and that's where the song idea came from".

Here's why her bad tattoo is amusing, then problematic, then amusing again.

I used to love Ariana Grande and I think a part of me always will but I can't get with the cultural appropriation from 7 rings and now this bbq "7 rings" tattoo. Ed Sheeran was famously inked by actress Saoirse Ronan during his "Galway Girl" video, with the message reading, "Galway Grill".

When those characters are combined, however, the meaning becomes completely different.

And hey, if Grande doesn't want to wait for her palm tattoo to rub away over time, which it likely will, she can just pay to have it laser-removed.

Getting a tattoo can sometimes be a hit or miss affair.
