Cadillac Takes Aim at Tesla, Teases All-New Electric SUV for 2022

Cadillac has also made mention of a "performance sedan", though it isn't clear if the brand was referring to a standalone model or a version of the upcoming CT4 or CT5, like a hot V-Series model.

"Cadillac will be the tip of the corporate spear on [electric vehicles]", said GM president Mark Reuss.

That would be an all-new, fully electric vehicle for Cadillac.

After promising on Friday that Cadillac would become GM's leading electric vehicle brand, the company unveiled the 2020 Cadillac XT6 EV two days later.

A large luxury crossover utility is inherently more profitable for any automaker than a compact hatchback, and those profits plus the falling costs seen by GM should ensure the electric Cadillac will not lose money.

The EV is still nameless though GM says it is the first vehicle with the automaker's future EV platform. The platform is the familiar skateboard design where a flat battery sits in the floor and electric motors are mounted at the axles, and GM has said that BEV3 will be able to offer more than 300 miles of range. The company plans to release a new model every six months through 2021. It will also allow for a shorter development cycle.

It's also the tradition that Tesla followed, launching first a six-figure electric sports auto, then a large luxury sedan with a price starting at roughly double the average transaction cost of a new vehicle. The EVs can be configured in front-, rear- or all-wheel drive, and the output of their battery systems will be adjustable based on vehicle and customer needs.

The new SUV EV will take on the likes of Tesla's own electric SUV, the Model X.
