Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard Says She’s Running for President

Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (Hawaii) said Friday that she will run for president in 2020.

"There are a lot of challenges that are facing the American people that I'm concerned about and that I want to help solve", Ms Gabbard told CNN, listing health care access, criminal justice reform and climate change as key platform issues.

"There are a lot of reasons for me to make this decision", Gabbard told CNN.

If elected, the 37-year-old lawmaker would be the youngest president in US history.

If elected, she would be the youngest ever and first woman President of the United States.

Gillibrand easily won re-election to the Senate in 2018 with more than $10.6 million in campaign money left over that she could funnel toward a presidential bid.

According to Politico contributor Marc Caputo, the Republican National Committee has dubbed Gabbard Assad's "mouthpiece" in Washington in an internal memo. But she simultaneously holds foreign policy positions close to Trump's. "The Gita has been a tremendous source of inner peace and strength for me through many tough challenges in life, including being in the midst of death and turmoil while serving our country in the Middle East, " she explained.

In 2015, Gabbard addressed the Christians United for Israel summit, and that same year said that while the USA remained a strong ally of Israel, the two countries diverge on how best to prevent a nuclear Iran, lamenting after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed Congress that the issue was being used as a "political football". Gabbard supported legislation that made it more hard for Syrian refugees to enter the U.S.

Gabbard, 37, who stepped down as DNC vice chair in 2016 to support Bernie Sanders in the Democratic Party primaries, has drawn flak from her side of the aisle, largely over her stance on gay rights and the U.S. involvement in Syria.

Her endorsement came in dramatic fashion, with her resigning as a vice chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to express her support. In 2016, she alarmed fellow Democrats when she met Donald Trump during his transition to the presidency.

A US Congresswoman, with an American Samoan heritage, says she will run for president in 2020.

On foreign policy, Gabbard is considered to be anti-interventionist.

"Trump's so-called populism has been a fraud", Gabbard said in August 2017. She also was one of the first female combat veterans elected to Congress ― deployed to Iraq from 2004 to 2005, and to Kuwait from 2008 to 2009 as a member of the Hawaii Army National Guard. But her views on Islam and support for far-right leaders suggest otherwise.

That report followed a late December piece by Eoin Higgins for Sludge, which also examined Gabbard's "connections to India, the world's most populous Hindu nation, including to the country's Hindu nationalist movement".
