House OKs bill to reopen US gov’t through February 8

This, in the wake of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's suggestion Wednesday that the address be postponed or relegated to being done in writing due to the partial government shutdown, now in its 27th day. Democrats say they will discuss border security once the government has reopened, but Pelosi is refusing money for the wall they view as ineffective and immoral.

Earlier this week, analysis from S&P Global Ratings suggested that the shutdown had cost the United States economy $3.6bn by 11 January - the 21 day of the shutdown.

The bill covers nearly 800,000 federal employees who were furloughed because of the shutdown beginning December 22, 2018.

Now in its 26 day, Senator Murray has heard from thousands of Washington state residents since the beginning of the shutdown, and has continued sharing their stories about the impacts of the shutdown with her Senate colleagues and on social media to highlight the urgent need to fully reopen the government and provide relief for hundreds of thousands of workers and families, including almost 13,000 Washingtonians.

"Obviously, if you would like to make your journey by flying commercial", he wrote, "that would certainly be your prerogative".

But G. William Hoagland, who was a top aide to former Senate GOP leader Bill Frist, described the White House officials as "dreaming".

The president's planned January 29 address became a potential casualty of the four-week partial government shutdown after the Democratic leader cited concerns about whether the hobbled government can provide adequate security.

The White House denied that the travel blockage was payback, but few bought the argument.

House Democrats said they were in lockstep with Mrs. Pelosi.

"Oversight is the responsibility of Congress, and it is inappropriate for the President to interfere with our constitutional duties", Luria said in a statement.

Graham, who is close to Trump, has been among the most outspoken Republican advocates of temporarily halting the shutdown.

But he also hit out at Trump, saying "denying Speaker Pelosi military travel to visit our troops in Afghanistan, our allies in Egypt and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation is also inappropriate".

A handful of Republican senators, including Lindsey Graham and Lisa Murkowski, were circulating a bipartisan draft letter to Trump asking him to support a measure that would reopen the government for three weeks while they work on funding legislation that would address his concerns about border security.

The bill, which went down 237-187, was brought to the floor in an aim to pressurise the Republicans to back away from US President Donald Trump's demand for the funding of the wall on the Mexico border, amid the partial government shutdown, that has now entered its record 25th day, The Hill reported. About half (47%) think Trump will be an unsuccessful president in the long run, compared with fewer (29%) who think he will be a successful president; 23% say it's too early to tell.

In a notice to staff, the department said it had found money to pay its employees beginning Monday for the next two-week pay period.

While Democratic members are fearful of being used as pawns in White House meetings like Wednesday's gathering with the Problem Solvers, Trump's strategy is to do just that by turning public opinion over the partial shutdown in his favor as multiple polls show a majority of Americans blame him - and to a lesser degree Republican lawmakers.

Trump critics quickly pointed out that he himself visited troops in Iraq during the shutdown. "So we'll just have to see how it comes", Said Pelosi.

"We believe this is completely inappropriate by the president".

However, Trump continued to insist that the wall was the best solution to the border crisis, to which the opposition Democrats disagree.
