Huawei: US charges Chinese telecoms giant with stealing trade secrets

The U.S. Department of Justice is formally levelling 23 criminal charges against Chinese tech juggernaut Huawei Technologies, multiple subsidiaries and chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou.

Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker says the department is proceeding with its extradition efforts against Meng, who was detained December 1 at the request of the USA upon arriving at the airport in Vancouver. Meng has said that she is innocent.

A separate case filed in Washington state charges Huawei with stealing trade secrets from T-Mobile.

The U.S. government is trying to prevent American companies from buying Huawei routers and switches and is pressing allies to do the same.

The company, which is the world's biggest manufacturer of telecommunications equipment, has consistently denied spying on behalf of the Chinese government.

Prosecutors also allege that Huawei stole trade secrets, including the technology behind a robotic device that T-Mobile used to test smartphones, prosecutors said. Huawei has said that the two companies settled their disputes in 2017.

Prosecutors charge Huawei used a Hong Kong shell company to sell equipment in Iran in violation of US sanctions.

Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, Homeland Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and FBI Director Christopher Wray will make a China-related enforcement announcement at 4:30 p.m., according to the Justice Department.

Congress is also considering anti-Huawei bills.
