Israeli Scientists: Cure for Cancer Likely in a Year

A team of Israeli scientists claim to have discovered a treatment for cancer that they believe they will turn into a cure within the next year, The Jerusalem Post reported late Monday night. "Our solution will be both generic and personal".

The scientists likened their treatment - called MuTaTo, for multi-target toxin - to a cancer antibiotic.

The Israeli scientists studied why previous cancer drugs failed. He explained that most anti-cancer drugs attack a specific target on or in the cancer cell, but they often trigger a mutation that makes the drug ineffective.

"The cancer cells can mutate in such a way that the cancer discards the targeted receptors". But MuTato, as the Jerusalem Post notes, uses "a combination of several cancer-targeting peptides for each cancer cell at the same time, combined with a strong peptide toxin that would kill cancer cells specifically".

"We believe we will offer in a year's time a complete cure for cancer", said Dan Aridor from Accelerated Evolution Biotechnologies, the company the treatment is being developed for.

"The probability of having multiple mutations that would modify all the targeted receptors decreases dramatically with the number of targets used", Morad continued. "Not even cancer can mutate three receptors at the same time".

Another reason why cancer drugs fail and the disease returns is because the drugs do not destroy cancer stem cells.

Morad said MuTaTo is also strong enough to both destroy stem cells and penetrate where other drugs can not reach.

It could also reduce the sickening side-effects of most cancer treatments, according to Morad.

He said that "more likely, this claim is yet another in a long line of spurious, irresponsible and ultimately cruel false promises for cancer patients". "However, as experience has taught us so many times, the gap from a successful mouse experiment to effective, beneficial application of exciting laboratory concepts to helping cancer patients at the bedside is in fact a long and treacherous journey, filled with unforeseen and unanticipated obstacles". However, they're now looking to launch a round of clinical trials which could be completed within a few years and would make the treatment available in certain cases.
