Jazmine Barnes shooting: Investigation takes 'a new direction'

Capital murder suspect Eric Black Jr., 20, has made his first court appearance Sunday morning, accused in the death of 7-year-old Jazmine Barnes.

In an emotional speech, Jazmine's aunt, Sharonica Watt, asked her niece's killer why he took the little girl's life.

Fifteen-year-old Alxis Dilbert, Washington's oldest daughter, was sitting in the front passenger seat when she noticed a red truck pull up beside their vehicle.

Aside from the tragic death of a lovely child, this case in particular received a mass of attention online because initial reports said a white man in his 30s or 40s was responsible for the shooting.

"I'm so happy to see all these faces from all over, and I thank you so much for doing this and coming together for my baby", Washington said with tears streaming down her face. Her daughter, 7-year-old Jazmine Barnes was shot in the head and died. "We're asking you to give justice to me and my family", said a tearful Ms Watt. That shooting remains unsolved.

The Sheriff's Office announced in a tweet there will be a news conference about the latest developments in this case at 2 p.m. Sunday. But they added that they had not yet determined a motive, including whether race might have played a role.

A $100,000 reward has been offered in the case. The murder of the girl has drawn worldwide interest and had celebrities, sports stars, activist and other public figures demand justice for Jazmine. A community rally to show support for Jazmine's family was planned for Saturday.

Jazmine's funeral is due to take place on Tuesday. "And I say this is a very special homegoing, because I got a handsome angel up there watching over me".

They held up balloons and stuffed animals, as well as signs that said "Justice for Jazmine".

"Do not be afraid to call this what it seems to be, a hate crime", she said. Nearby was a Walmart and strip malls with restaurants, banks, a Starbucks and other businesses.

The 7-year-old was shot in the head last weekend by someone who opened fire on the famly's auto.

Authorities say the girl was killed when the suspect fired into a vehicle she was riding in.

She said that she feels optimistic about the ongoing manhunt because there were so many people gathered and so many people involved in the effort.
