Kamala Harris hopes to make history with 2020 United States presidential bid

Kamala Harris hopes to make history with 2020 United States presidential bid

"For ourselves, for our children, and for our country", while simultaneously announcing her bid for the Democratic nomination on ABC's Good Morning America.

Vowing to "bring our voices together", Harris would be the first woman to hold the presidency if she succeeds.

The Democratic primary begins early next year.

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) on Monday morning became the latest Democrat to announce a 2020 presidential run, choosing Martin Luther King Jr. Day, as well as the fact that 47 years ago this week, Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American woman to run for president, launched her campaign, CNN reports.

"She was a good person", said former classmate Dean Smith.

Her staff says she plans to reject the assistance of a super PAC, as well as corporate PAC money.

Ms. Harris batted aside questions about how she will stand out among others looking to take on President Trump, saying "the voters will decide" the answers to those questions. Elizabeth Warren, Rep. Julian Castro, Sen.

"There are fundamental flaws in the criminal justice system and. this criminal justice system needs to be reformed", she said.

That visit followed her aggressive questioning of then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh at the height of #MeToo movement and the sexual assault allegations against Kavanaugh, which he denied.

Harris will hold a formal campaign launch in Oakland next week.

Harris also may be one of a number of Californians to join the race.

Kamala Harris is running for president in 2020.

"I've been a little surprised that there hasn't been more talk about the other high-profile male candidates announcing", said Bret Nilles, chairman of the Linn County, Iowa, Democrats. Lara Bazelon, a University of San Francisco law professor, wrote in a New York Times op-ed last week that if Harris "wants people who care about dismantling mass incarceration and correcting miscarriages of justice to vote for her, she needs to radically break with her past".

Before her 2016 victory in the Senate race, Harris made her career in law enforcement. She also has come under scrutiny for declining as attorney general to prosecute OneWest, the bank once headed by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, for alleged foreclosure violations. "She's to my left on some issues".

She's highlighted racial disparities between whites and blacks on maternal mortality and criminal sentencing.

Recent polling has shown that Harris is the top choice among the three current female candidates, though "white males" - former VP Joe Biden, Sen.

"You have to actively compete in the Southern states".

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who unsuccessfully sought the 2016 Democratic nomination, is also considering a campaign.

While in office, Harris built up a strong history of supporting LGBTQ rights. Her name Kamala (which she pronounces "comma-la" or "calm-ala") comes from the Sanskrit word for lotus plant. "Harris in this race will play a crucial role in ensuring our voices are heard loud and clear in this primary", she said.

The 2016 presidential election came down to about 80,000 votes in three states - Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and MI.

She and other Democrats will have to navigate the party's debate about whether an establishment figure who can appeal to centrist voters or a fresh face who can energise its increasingly diverse and progressive base offers the best chance to beat Trump in 2020.

"I think because it's the year of the woman, she'll have the ability to lean into that".

She said it's an inspiration to see a woman in the running for a senior position in politics. "But she still has to work for it".
