Mubadala WTC: Novak Djokovic edges Kevin Anderson for historic title

Novak Djokovic shared a tongue-wagging moment with his son, literally!

Rafael Nadal will hit the practice court at the Queensland Tennis Centre later today as he looks to build an Australian Open preparation.

In the third place play-off against Thiem, Khachanov won the match via the super tie-break, which he won 10-3 after the two players were locked 1-1 after two sets.

Karen Khachanov of Russian Federation competes during his match against Dominic Thiem of Austria at the 2018 Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), on December 29, 2018.

"He is always going to be a number one because he was the number one in the world and a multiple grand slam victor, so he has the number one champion's mentality", said Djokovic in his interview at the Mubadala WTC.

World No 1 Novak Djokovic won a fourth Mubadala World Tennis Championship title on Saturday, coming back from a set down to beat Kevin Anderson 4-6, 7-5, 7-5. Anderson followed it up with a comfortable service game and took the opening set 6-4 in 41 minutes.

Asked if there is a record he dreams of capturing before the end of his career, Djokovic said: "I would lie if I say I didn't want to get to as high as Grand Slam wins number possible".

This is the 4th time that the Serbian legend wins the title in Abu Dhabi following his triumphs in 2011, 2012, and 2013.

"When you are out since a long time ago - I had the surgery a little over a month ago - it's normal that I have some pains", Nadal said after his loss to world number six Anderson.

"I really am happy to have a match like this".

Earlier in the day, Russia's Karen Khachanov won the third-place match 6-3, 4-6, 10-3 over Austrian Dominik Thiem, who stepped in for Nadal after the Spaniard made a decision to skip the contest to avoid aggravating an injury. When you play someone like this at this level you want to win. Honestly this is a ideal way to start the season.

"My goal is try to be ready for the Australian Open and I think I'm on the way to make that happen but of course I can't take a lot of risk being the first match after a lot of months and especially after the surgery".
